with Arts and Culture Luncheon, and

activities awaits you starting on
Saturday February 25th through to
Sunday the 26th. Enter the doors of
the traditional Sugar Shack in the
Festival Village in Beban Park where
non-stop events are guaranteed to
keep the festival public of all ages
amused in this unforgettable cultural
experience. Sample our well-known
maple toffee on snow and, this year

a break after sampling the vast menu?
Take a horse and carriage ride
through the park, or sit back and
relax while top-notch performers
entertain throughout the day. Learn
about the art of tree tapping and the
making of maple syrup, or dance to
the infectious rhythms of both
traditional folk and contemporary
world beat musi¢. Expect the
unexpected as surprises await you at
every corner: face painting, clowns,
ice-carving demonstrations, First
Nations' exhibitions, a dynamite

Message from the President

I take great pleasure in sending my best regards

to all ER and Francophiles taking
part in the 6th annual Maple Sugar Festival
hosted by the Association des francophones de
Nanaimo.

The fun and energy that fife Francophone cul-
ture are on display throughout this Festival's events
and activities. The Fédération des francophones
de la Colombie-Britannique, the organization that
speaks for B.C. 3 Francophones, believes that the Maple Sit Festival
is living proof of the vitality of this provinces Francophone community.

The Maple Sugar Festival is now a widely recognized event. The thou-
sands of visitors who come from Nanaimo and elsewhere in British Co-
lumbia year after year are a testament to its quality. And the contribu-
tion of the Francophone community to the economies of both the prov-
ince and the country are confirmed by the partnerships formed between
the Association des francophones de Nanaimo and the city of Nanaimo
and a number of regions in Quebec. The success of the Maple Sugar
Festival and the exceptional efforts of all the staff and volunteers at the
Association des francophones de Nanaimo reflect positively on all B.C.
Francophones.

Greetings Friends,

On behalf of our board members, our administrative team and all the
members of the Association des francophones de Nanaimo (L’ AFN), I
welcome you to the 6th annual Maple Sugar Festival du Sucre d’Erable.

I would like to thank and congratulate all the organisers and volunteers of
the festival who continue to work diligently, year after year, in order to
offer a varied cultural event of the highest quality.

Once again, the festival is adding new and exciting elements to its pro-
gram. This year we invite you to attend the first ever province-wide
Toffee Idol Contest for rising stars, or perhaps you’d like to mix business
with arts and culture, at our Friday luncheon hosted by the Nanaimo
Chamber of Commerce. Several high profile guests will be joining
British Columbia’s Minister for Intergovernmental Affairs, the Honorable
John van Dongen at this luncheon, which will celebrate the return of the
Quebec’s Maple Region delegation to our event.

I wish to thank all of our government and community sponsors, in par-
ticular Citadelle-Camp, the world’s largest manufacturers of Maple prod-
ucts, who have generously endowed our festival with rich colours and
sumptuous flavours!

I look forward to having you celebrate with your community, dance to

enchanting rhythms, satiate your sweet tooth and thoroughly enjoy all the
festivities our event has to offer from February 22nd to 26th.
