He has work- ed’ for School District 88 ever "since, © ~The way in which Wilson . Alternate City tax — still being pondered TERRACE — Ifyou recall- : reading a mid-April report - about an alternate form of taxa- tion being considered” by the city, and then hearing nothing more, thought it had gone away — you were wrong. The idea disappeared into the mazes of the Finance Committee only to resurface almost three months later in about the same shape as it went in. And now it’s going back to committee again. City council has adopted a Finance Committee recommen- dation that tables the matter to the next Finance Committee -meeting, and asks in the mean- ‘ time that the city treasurer ‘‘in- vestigate how much revenue po- tential there is in these alternate « forms of taxation in order ta . determine whether the matter is worth pursuing further’ and “that the treasurer investigate © _whether or not funds generated by alternate forms of taxation - may be earmarked for specific _ projects’. The minutes of this _ Meeting also indicate that the city treasurer has already dis- cussed the idea of alternate ‘forms of taxation with other | Northwest communities. ‘ The idea of an alternate form of taxation first surfaced when presented by alderman Danny Sheridan at the Apr. 10 meeting. . of council. “It may not come about,’’ said Sheridan at the time, but added that his Fi- nance, Personnel and Adminis- tration Committee was taking a_ look anyway. Mayor Jack Tal- stra said the idea had come from budget- discussions and should be explored. Sheridan explained that, if the idea were to become a reality, the city would impose. a sales tax on items such as liquor, gasoline and hotel and motel rooms in order to raise money for tourism ‘develop- ment, On July 17, at a joint coun- cil/Chamber of Commerce meeting, Sheridan: told local businessmen not to get too ex- cited — yet. The city would ‘‘try. to come up with a good con- sultative process before we go too far’ he promised, He added that some people he had spoken to.had voiced no objection, pro- viding all revenue goes into tourism development, others suggested that, ‘‘Once it’s taken away, we have no control’, The last paragraph of .this story is waiting f for council's decision. 7 -'was Roberts’ came to reside:in the Northwest is a story in itself. Following his graduation from McMaster, he spent nine months touring Greece, Turkey, Iran, Afghanis- tan, Pakistan, India and Nepal. -He then. returned to Canada to begin a coast-to-coast tour. His journey ended’ in Granisle, where he spent some time work- ing. in mining and forestry before heading to Simon Fraser to work on his Teaching Cer- tificate. Wilson began teaching _ English and French at Kitwanga _ ' Blementary/Junior Secondary School in 1980. His duties in Kit- wanga also included the posi- tions of Athletic Director and’ Counsellor. One of Wilson’s ‘greatest rewards during his six yeats at Kitwanga came from the achievements of a student by the name of Craig Roberts. Wilson wrestling coach during those six years, and Roberts, now a student at Simon Fraser University, achieved status in both the provincial and national. championships. In 1986, Wilson transferred to Skeena Junior Secondary School to teach English and French. His extracurricular involvement with Skeena students since his arrival has been primarily through the weightlifting club. Wilson’s ability in teaching was recognized last year when he was appointed as a member of on Language Arts and English for the Grades 1. to 12 Cur- riculum Guide. Their work is nearly complete and the results aré something which Wilson de- scribes as ‘‘a really forward- looking document”, He explains: ‘‘The idea is to’ get fluent first. Then creative. Then critical’ as to form (gram- mar).’’ He says it will demand _ that teacher be much more pro-. fessional in offering. individual- ized instruction, but it will ad- dress social changes resulting from a more pronounced mix of cultures and the effects of tele- vision on today’s students. Wilson lives in Terrace with his wife: Ingrid and their two |. children Heather, seven,. and | Shane, 10. His many hobbies in- clude computer programming and telecommunications with B.C. universities, hunting, hik- -ing and photography. ‘ His appointment to the posi- tion of vice-principal comes as a result of several changes at the secondary school lIevel that began with the resignation of Caledonia principal Bill Sturn. Skeena vice-principal Bill Gook will be taking over as the prin- cipal of Thornhill Junior Sec- ondary, and former Thornhill principal Tom Hamakawa will be taking over Sturn’s S position at Caledonia.
