Not guilty of keeping cub CASTLEGAR, B.C. (CP) — Two Winlaw, B.C. men were found not guilty Tuesday of unlawfully keeping an orphaned black bear cub in captivity. Stephen Mark, 26, and Stan Nelson, 17, were charged _ with keeping the cub without notiflying the fish and wildlife branch. Judge I. B. He said the two were legally entitled to kill the cub, but “took pity on that aroall creature and decided to find a proper home for it,” Conservation officers laid charges after claiming the bear March 23. _written to the and = Light Denies collars cause cancer VANCOUVER (CP) -— A Hartz Mountain Co. spokesman said Tuesday he was surprised and upset about recent claims that chemicals in pet flea collars, which Hartz manufactures, could cause genetic mu- tations in unborn babies. Dr, Bernard Hayes, a British Columbia agriculture ministry field veterinarian, last week recommended the collars not be used in the homes of women of child- bearing age. A provincial report stated the dioxin content of some collars posed a threat to fetus. Dr. John Blatherwick, medical health director of Simon Fraser Health Unit in nearby Burnaby, had in- structed his nurses to warn pregnant women attending pre-natal classes about the danger of the collars. The Hartz spokesman at the company's head office in New Jersey said: ‘There is no dioxin in our flea collars and there never has been.” | “I’s not even possible. The chemical formation of tetrachlorinphos (the active ingredient in the collars) doesn’t come anywhere near creating dioxin.” | Dioxin has been linked to camer and genetic mutations in laboratory test animals. _ -- ‘The spokesman said Hartz . conducted reproduction tests over three generations and reported no effects of any kind on any of the offspring. During the trials for the Hartz collar, some of the test animals were pregnant and all’ delivered normally, he said. The commission had board proposing that a special committee be struck to look into the standards of local Jockups throughout the prov- a. “We'll tell them we don’t ‘want it,” said board member Alf Hood when Mayor Mike Young raised the police com- mission's proposal. “You don’t need a com- mittee to go in and tell you whether you've got porcelain or stainless steel toilet bowls. They are just setting something up that would be a travelling circus.” Young agreed, saying he feels there is no need for a police commission standards committee or inspection | Body search called off SIDNEY, B.C, (CP) — RCMP at this south Van- couver Island community called off a search today for businessman Franklin Terry, 38, of Houston, Texas, who fell from the ferry Queen of Esquimalt late Monday.
