<< s— Vazzy Friday, June 16 * 2-3pm Ā« concert Friday, June 23 + 2-3pm + Dance Workshop Kitsilano Community Centre (2690, Larch Street) *Free admission The British Columbian duo that goes by the name of Vazzy is composed of Suzanne Leclerc and Bryn Wilkin. They bring to young and not-so-young audiences shows that feature traditional French Canadian music with roots in Acadia, Quebec and France. Vazzy uses a variety of stringed instruments, such as the mandolin, violin, banjo, oude, vihuela (a Renaissance guitar) and Irish harp, as well as percussion instruments including drums such as the doumbeck, tambourines and bodhran along with foot tapping and spoon play- e ing. The duo also offers workshops in playing the spoons, tradi- tional dance and foot tapping (podorythmia). Suzanne Leclerc grew up in an Acadian community in northern New Brunswick. She was born into a family of sixteen children, in which traditional songs were part of everyday life. She learned foot tapping from her father and her passion for singing began at a very young age, as she explored the song books of her mother. She loves to share with her audiences the origins, meaning and the social and historical context that gave birth to the songs that are still sung today. Her performances bring to life the feelings and the ways of the people who sang these songs in earlier times. Bryn Wilkin was born in Ontario into a family that was very involved in music and theatre. At the age of seven, he moved to England. Having acquired a taste for travel at a young age, he lived in France for several years, where he began to play the mandolin. He then traveled to the Mediterranean and absorbed a variety of cultural and musical influences that have left their marks on his music today. On his return to Canada, he was inspired by the traditional music of Quebec, Acadia and the Celtic world. He also discovered a number of instruments, many of which have their origins in the Middle Ages in France, and he uses them to accompany tradi- tional French Canadian music. Vazzy's first album of traditional French Canadian songs will be avail- able toward the end of the summer of 2006.
