A "% aa — SS : { | min ain + ; | ‘Madness, hysteria, insanity’ in Carter’s billions for war By WILLIAM ALLAN OAKLA ND — Congressman Ronald V. Dellums (Dem. Ber- keley) charged here, Feb. 2, that the r Administration is _ Whipping up ‘madness, hysteria, msanity’’, which is hailed by the right wing, because of developments in Afghanistan. _ He told 900 people attending the 43rd anniversary meeting of the veterans of the Abraham Lin- coln Brigade who fought in Spain for the Republic back in 1936 that Carter is using the Afghanistan situation as an excuse for boost- ing the military budget. He said that Carter has a prop- - osed budget of $616-billion dollars of which $158.7-billion is for the military “That’s obscene,” he said. “You were described as pre- - mature anti-fascists, when you went to Spain to defend the Spanish Republic against fascist forces like Franco backed by Hi- tler and Mussolini. “You challenged the fascists; - today we have to follow your example. It is ourresponsibility to challenge this hysteria, this mad- ness, this rhetoric. Carter is pre- pared and is exploiting this mad- ness to manipulate a new cold war. He now agrees with the mili- tary, the right wing, that it was a mistake not to develop the neut- ron bomb, the B-1 bomber. If you have nuclear weapons and bombs they will be used by the US., that’s why in five years time the military budget could be a trillion dollars.”’ Dellums declared that in Washington the President is tel- ling Congress that he needs a five-year military budget of a trill- ion dollars in order to make the Soviet Union pay the price. “Let us warship!” “Then why the hell is it. that millions of people in this country are bleeding from this military budget,’’ Dellums asked. ‘“‘You cannot have a military budget with a limited budget for social oa without the people feeling its - He said that President Carter had already put Salt-II in hock be- fore the Soviet Union entered Af- ghanistan. — “The Soviet Union did that to protect her borders. Remember, they lost 20 million people to the nazis. Remember the conflict now between them and China. So we send our representatives to China and tell them that we will give them our technology to go with their armies. We put in Europe weapons that are within striking distance of the Soviet Union, in West Germany, so we take sides with their enemies. The Congressman appealled to the Spanish war veterans that the challenges to the ideals of peace and freedom distorts what they fought for in 1936. ‘‘We must be- come the premature anti-nuclear and anti-cold war fighters of the 1980's”’, he concluded. Training Afghan saboteurs Those who are fond of clamor- ous propaganda campaigns con- tinue to shout from the house tops about a ‘‘Soviet interference’ in Afghanistan’s affairs. If one wants to understand who is really meddling in the Afghan affairs, he had better refer to facts, rather than to lies. Today we have once again wit- nessed reality and got a clear answer to the question who is most shamelessly interfering in the affairs of sovereign Afghanis- tan and encroaching on the gains of the April revolution. Abdul Kadyr Azizi, a high- ranking member of the Democra- tic Republic of Afghanistan’s sec- urity service, leads us to a stand hung with machine-guns, rifles, pistols, submachine guns, and ammunition. “‘All this has been captured by our troops at different times and in - different places,’’ he says. “‘Our enemies got these weapons also from different places — the USA, Egypt, Pakistan, China. This is shown by the trademarks. And this (he points to the heaps of leaflets, booklets and posters) is an ideological weapon, propa- ganda printed matter. The bandits ‘infiltrating the Afghan territory scatter this rubbish in villages and on Toads.” _Abdul Kadyr Azizi indicates circles on the map with the names of the camps at which terrorists and saboteurs are being trained. -Such camps number over 30. Some of them lie near the city of Peshwar. “I don’t think there is any need to tell you about the tasks and purposes of the camps for traing- ing saboteurs and terrorists,”’ Azizi says. ‘*You had better talk to them yourselves ...”’ Like Green Berets There are three of them, three strong young men. They have be- trayed their country and deserted to the enemy. Two of them have yielded to false propaganda and the third was recruited from among convicts. Abdulla Goll is a former student of Kabul Univer- sity. Abdul Malek has not even finished eight forms at a‘general school, and Abdul Basir deserted from the school of cadets. _ They are sitting in front of us with their heads hung. Of course, repentance came late but still it did come, and they have told everything in detail to inter- rogators and pleaded guilty. They are now waiting for a trial. “‘Who were your instructors at the training camps?”’ We put this question to each of them. The answers coincide — Americans and Chinese were among their instructors. ‘*What was the character of the training?’’ It becomes clear that they were drilled almost in accordance with ETHIOPIA GIVES $200,000 TO PATRIOTIC FRONT CAMPAIGN ADDIS ABABA — The government of Ethiopia has granted $200,000 to the Zimbabwe Patriotic Front for its election campaign in Zimbabwe. The decision to send economic assistance was taken in accordance with a resolution adopted at the 34th ministerial meeting session of the Organization of African Unity (O AU) being held in Addis Abada. The resolutions calls on all OAU member states to give all- round financial and material aid to the Patriotic Front to ensure it holds an effective election campaign. U.S. STILL PLANS TO INTERFERE GRENADA CHARGES ST. GEORGE'S, Grenada — As the Island makes ready to mark the first anniversary of its revolution on March 13, Prime Minister Maurice Bishop has charged that the United States continues its plan to over- throw the People’s Revolutionary Government. An attempt was made recently to land mercenaries from two U.S. ships, he said at a press conference. Bishop said that although President Carter in his State of the Union Message talked profusely of his firm allegiance to the defense of human rights, democratization, economic development and non-interference in the internal affairs of Latin American and the Caribbean, his remarks serve to cover up the real aggressive plans the U.S. has for the area. At the same time Bishop announced his country will receive some $10-million in financial.aid from Algeria, Libya and Syria which will be used mainly for the construction of a new, modem airport on the outskirts of the capital. The facility will cost $45-million and will take large commercial aircraft. — AFGHANISFAN-PAKISTAN SOLIDARITY MESSAGE SENT ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — The opposition Pakistan National Party (PNP) has expressed its complete solidarity with Afghanistan. FRENCH TRADE UNIONISTS GREET CHILEAN WORKERS PARIS — The leadership of the General Labor’ Confederation of France sent a message expressing solidarity with the Chilean people against the fascist dictatorship of Pinochet. The message was sent to the Chilean trade unions, which it said, were making a contribution to the defense of the achievements of the Chilean working class in the struggle for the restoration of democracy in the country. 2 At a time when imperialist countries, including the government of France, are expanding their economic and military aid to Pinochet, the message said, the General Labor Confederation of France expresses its solidarity with the working people and trade unions of Chile. The message was sent on the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the French trade union confederation. the program of the training of ere”, Green Berets during the Vietnam war. A. Goll and A. Malek were taught the skill of killing and plun- dering at the Gulbahar-2 base near Peshawar. A. Basir spent the three months of the training course at Korm,’also in Pakistani territory. The first task of his small terrorist group was to de- _ liver weapons — 30 rifles, 20 submachine guns, 200 hand gre- . nades and 25,000 rounds — to Af- ghanistan: Then, upon entrench- ing themselves near the village of Tezin, the bandits were to pre- pare a big base camp and wait for another group of saboteurs. “What did your group speci- fically engage in?”’ ° A. Basir says that it burnt crops, made inroads against vil- lages and cut power line wires in the Sarobi area. ‘‘Who gave you last instruc- tions?”’ 3 All the-three say that U.S. and Chinese instructors examined them.
