From front Bear backers get ready |! for quick logo decision northwest can begin to take advantage of the tour- ism marketing power and business opportunities that would spring from the bear’s selection, Jackson's ~ environ- mental organization would also gain. He hopes naming the Kermode bear the Olympic mascot will advance. the group’s prime goal - crea- tion of a large central coast preserve for the bears centred on Princess Royal Island. Some other activists have branded him a sell- out, but Jackson says it makes sense to take ad- vantage of opportunities the Olympics present, From front “It’s going to happen regardiess and this is a way to use the Olympics to do a lot more good,” Skeena MLA Roger Harris says he wants a pro- posed logo and a high- powered video presenta- tion to power the white bear over the finish line. He says he wants that .. package ready by.the end of September - when a new ‘games operating com- mittee is expected to be in place. One of its first jobs will be examining mascots and symbols, “We want to be at the front of the line,” Harris said. , He says he's already been contacted by artists interested in the project. Harris sees the logo on every northwest product sold.to the global market —a Kermode bear image stamped on each Alcan aluminum ingot or bundle of lumber. “That's the type of ex- posure we want,” he said. Work is also underway to. make sure the Kermode- for-logo drive isn’t too Ter- race-focused, Harris said. Terrace reps were also in Prince Rupert last weekend - with a stuffed Kermode bear in tow — to advance the logo plan with cabinet ministers and northern MLAs at the B.C. Liberal regional confer-. ence there, Terrace ranks high on list seen elsewhere, says Mi- chael Gregory, BMO Fi- nancial Group's assistant chief economist. Areas high on the list are often communities with’ certain types of indu- stries — like forestry — that tend to spawn a wide var- iety of supporting small businesses; says Gregory, ‘He says. there’s often large numbers of business service providers, profes- sional, technical and scientific service busines- ses in such areas. “These hotbeds seem to be spread right across the country,” he added. Gregory also said areas hit hard by government cutbacks often experience a surge in small business activity as skilled laid-off public sector workers set up new enterprises. While Terrace ranks high, its neighbours don’t. Kitimat finished dead last in the survey in LL 1th position out of the small and mid-sized centres. It had 20.3 payroll businesses per 1,000 population. Prince Rupert was 71st with 29.4 businesses per thousand. Prince George was 35th with 35.4.
