Blaze bigger than wanted FIRE HAZARDS may be low to moderate around Terrace last week, but that doesn’t mean local forest service firefighters weren’t busy. Crews battled a .5 hec- tare lightning strike at Par- rott Lake, south of Houston and a vehicle fire on Hud- son Bay Mountain near Smithers. A 20-person crew from Kitimat was also sent to Fort St. John to cut a fire guard around a 40 hectare blaze, That fire -—about 28 miles northeast of Fort St. John — was controlled large- ly by cold wet weather early last week. By far the largest fire - in the Spatsizi Wilderness Area near Hyland Post in Northern B.C. — was inten- tionally lit June 2 by B.C, Parks staff to improve ani- mal habitat. But it took off on those who set it and the blaze consumed between 4,000 to §,000 hectares of trees in a 9,000 hectare area. Fire service information officer Al McDonald said - the habitat burn was meant to generate belter grass and feed for area animals and was scheduled to lake place, section by section, over a number of years. That plan was scrapped when hot dry conditions teamed with afternoon winds to blow the flames out of control by June 3. “We had a little bit of an overachievement,” McDo- nald said. He said the forest service didn’t said people to -the blaze, save for, a.couple, fites fighters to protect park ca- bins. ' The fire stayed within park boundaries and didn’t damage any harvestable for- est. McDonald said drizzle’ and cool conditions con- tained the fire by June 5, but the blaze is still under observation. “We expect to see the odd wisp of smoke for the next month or so,” he said. injured RCMP SAY lab results will determine whether a 28- year-old Terrace motorcycl- ist involved in an accident at the corner of Walsh and Eby June 3 will be charged with impaired driving. “We're actively invest- igating this,” said Terrace RCMP Cnst. J.R. Walker. The male driver, whose name can not be released until if and when charges are confirmed, was travel- ling “significantly faster than the posted speed limit” south on Eby Street around 9 p.m. Saturday, June 3, Said Walker. The motorcyclist geared down at toa high of a speed, he said, and the bike’s back tire began to bounce. The bike wobbled, hit the tire of a stopped car and continued south about 50 feet before stopping. The motorcyclist was thrown off the bike and landed underneath the car of two Caledonia students en route to their high school prom, “His head made contact with the underside of the vehicle,” said Walker. “If he hadn’t been wearing a leather jacket his injuries would have been a lot worse.” The driver spent about five days at Mills Memorial Hospital with a concussion ~ his helmet came off be- fore he hit the ground — and a broken leg, Walker said the students’ vehicle suffered a flat tire but the grads weren't hurt in the accident.
