Labor-Farmer picnic to be event of year’ “The Labor-Farmer picnic on August 9 at Bear Creek in the heart of the Fraser Valley promises to be one of the out- standing events of the year,” Picnic committee this week. Says a statement issued by the “Here is an opportunity for workers and farmers with their families to come together for a whole day of enjoyment and better understanding of each other’s problems.” Highlight of the day will be an address by one of Can- ada’s outstanding labor lead- ers, C. §. Jackson, Canadian president of the United Elec- trical, Radio and Machine Workers Union, who will speak on the need for labor- farmer unity. A prominent farm spokesman will also be featured. Entertaining cultural selec- tions from various national groups will take place every hour on the hour, An international kitchen will provide tempting nation- al dishes to satisfy the most demanding tastes. There will be a cake walk and tea house, too. An outstanding feature of the day will be crowning of Miss Labor and Miss Farmer, Many groups are at present engaged in the contest to elect their favorite. Family sports, movies for the kiddies and games will be part of the day’s activities. Bus service will be made available at nominal cost. Finnish Organization loses pioneer member Progressive labor in British Columbia lost a strong sup- porter from its ranks in the recent death of Emil Saari in his 85th year. Born in Finland in 1874 Emil Saari came to Canada at the turn of the century and lived in British Columbia most of the ‘time since, working in the logging and heavy construc- tion industry. An activist in the local Finnish Organization, arri in- troduced a great deal of pro- gressive literature, and made it a point to see to it that such literature was readily avail- able to the younger people around the Finnish Hall.
