A10- The Terrace Stendard, Wednesday, February 23, 2000 Bigger for Heritage Park location THERE ARE plans afoot to make native culture and history a bigger part of Heritage Park. City councillor Val George said the idea has been raised with the neighbouring Kitsumkalum , and Kitselas bands, adding there seems to be interest. “We're going to tap into that interest and see what we can do together,” he said. George said it could range from dancing or dis- play of artifacts to elders telling stories. “The native communi- ties themselves may come up with ideas we haven't even thought of,” he said. The park, which had been run by local volun- teers unlil they agreed to turn it over to the city last year, had always concen- trated on white pioneer history rather than aborigi- nal history. “The proup of people who put it together, their idea was to get these her- ilage buildings and put them somewplace so they didn’t dissappear on us,” George said. “So it’s not. they surprising focussed their attention on that aspect of things.” The park is owned by the city and operated by its arm’s length Terrace Community Facilities Society. It’s charged with opera- ting Heritage Park, Ferry’ Island and the R.E.M. Lee Theatre as creatively as possible to enhance -ser- vices and- boost revenues where possible.
