Fixing sewer pipe to be more expensive than first thought | REPAIRING the ruined sewage outfall pipe in the Skeena River will cost the city much more than it first thought. The lowest bid for the complex project came in $200,000 higher than city officials budgeted — meaning that much extra money will have to be found in the 2000 budget. Councillors weren’t happy with the turn of events, but went with the staff recommendation to award the contract to Mandrax Enterprises Ltd,:..-- for $648,462. Two other bidders had come in at $733,000 and $895,000. “T have a problem with the cost, but I don’t think we have any option,” said councillor Val George. The pipe, which pre- viously had a kink in it, stopped working altage- ther in this summer’s flood. It’s not yet known whether it was hit by a floating log or what hap- pened, Sewage backing up out of the pipe has been chan- nelled first with a ditch and later with a temporary pipe to the river. The new outfall pipe will have-a-special-arm-- oured layer above it to prevent damage. The pipe has to extend well out into the fast-running part of the river. It’s a big job that will involve placing a barge in the middle of the river while work goes on. The bids for the outfall replacement don’t include other cosis of the project such as engineering costs, environmental monitor- ing, administration and expenses so far, Engineering director Stew Christensen said the city had budgeted $600,000 in 1999 for the whole project, but will now-have-to.find-another $200,000 in the :2000 budget because of the higher than expected bids. Repairs coming TRAIL REPAIRS to da- maged parts of the Ferry Island trail system have been approved by cily council, Two sections of trail about 60 metres long pot washed oul during this summer's flooding. Those areas are going to be rebuilt and shored up with imported gravel, Recreation superinten- den! Steve Scott said that's the best way to both restore the trail sectiuns to use and protect the the no- w-exposed roots of stands of alder, birch and cotton- wood trees on the island. Another low-lying arca is also being improved. It's an inland scclion of the trail thal gels submerged frequently by the high water table. Gravel will be added there to build up the trail area, said Scott. It'll take up to two weeks to pel the work done and the expected cost of $4,000 is coming out of the city parks de- partment budget. Scott says this year's flooding caused the most damage to Ferry Island's trails since he's been here.
