Knights’ morning to remember LOCAL YOUNGSTERS had a morning of fun competition, refreshments and an op- portunity to take home a trophy Saturday, Jan. 28, courtesy of the Knights of ' Columbus. The event was the basketball free-throw competition the or- ganization stages each year for 10-14 year old boys and girls. All competitors took 15 Shots at the hoop for the local Council competition. When the last ball had been thrown, Fernando Medeiros and Andrea Van Gelder had taken the 14 years titles while Michael Botelho emerged as the 13 years boys sharpshooter. (There were entries in the girls’ side of that age group). Sukhjit Dhaliwal outshot his 12 year old rivals as did Alison Mantel. . Among 11 years olds, Rick Dhaliwal and Pam Gauronski came out on top and the 10 year old winners were Justin Voogd and Meghan Janes. Each of the winners then took another 25 shots in a bid . fo win the district title. Organizer Gualter Rego ex- plained the district took in Terrace, Smithers, Prince ~ Rupert and Kitimat. Similar competitions were held in those communities and _ the Council winners at each location also had another 25 throws, _ The district medal winners -will be decided by tabulating those various results. The same score comparison will then apply in deciding if any of the northwest district . winners did well enough to take the State (provincial title). . While the competition at that last level is pretty tough, Rego ‘anticipated =the countback would show a couple of Ter- race competitors had picked up. district titles. Mike Keenan [fs perceived as something of a Jekkyi and Hyde. 7 An intelligent strategist and a ruthless manipulator but really his philosophy is quite basic as his newest star player Brett Hull has quickly found out. “Mike is really a great guy,” said Brett after the St, Louis Blues won their first game. at home. “He just wants you to work hard and do what he asks and if you don’t, he'll snap!" it was expected that Keenan ‘and the free-spirited Hull would be at odds within hours of Mike's hiring. Instead, they're admiring each other as though they found out they're long-lost brothers. There's an impression Keenan spends hours poring over tapes and drills but he really does little of that. His cup-winning Rangers didn't practise the powerplay ail — year, Instead, he pushes conditioning and pushes emotion and he pushes and pushes. Some can handle il, some can't. He always seems to have a celebrated confrontation with a star. In Chicago, Ed Belfour hated being pulled from the goal and Doug Wilson simply hated Keenan. To succeed, though, he must be in control and that's why there’s only. one general manager he can.work for. Himself. : It's simple really. There's no comfort zone with Keenan. Few players lave him; some loathe him; many fear him. He has little time for those who whine and heaps responsibility on the stars. “He's been great,” says Al MacInnis, who seldom leaves the ica, ") talked to the guys who played for him on the Rangers and they say he’s really changed.
