USSR cleans its rivers

There are 336 big and small riv-
ers flowing into the gem of
Siberia, Lake Baikal, the largest
reservoir of fresh water in the

serious wounds on nature.

For years the river banks on
which numerous timber enter-
prises had sprung up were littered
with waste. The rivers grew shal-
low and silted. As time passed,
they ceased to be a spawning
place for fish. As a result, the

fell drastically.

That is why the Soviet Gov-
emment decided to take urgent

Expressing the will of the Soviet
Communists, of the entire Soviet people,
the 25th Congress of the CPSU solemnly
proclaims its fraternal and indissoluble
solidarity with the Communists, with all
fighters against imperialism and reaction,
and above all with the victims of fascist
repressions, those who languish in con-
centration camps and prisons, and who
are subjected to brutal torture. The in-
human ordeal that has fallen to their lot is
the class revenge for their heroic partici-
pation in the noble struggle for the in-
terests of the working people, for the
triumph of the ideals of peace and demo-
cracy, national independence and
socialism. <

Despite the angry protests of broad
sections of world opinion, the fascist
junta in Chile continues to trample on all
norms of law and to keep in confinement
that outstanding son of the Chilean
people, that prominent personality of the
world communist movement, the Gen-
eral Secretary of the Communist Party of
Chile, Luis Corvalan.

In Uruguay the authorities have
started another wave of repressions
against the progressive forces. We de-
mand: Release secretaries of the Central
Committee of the Communist Party of
Uruguay J. Perez and J.L. Macera; re-
lease all Uruguayan Communists, the

Antonio Maydana, chairman of the
Paraguayan Communist Party, has been
languishing in prison for 18 years. A
tyrannical military dictatorship holds
Sway over the whole country. Release
Antonio Maydana! Release M.A. Soler,
secretary of. the Central Committee of
the Paraguayan Communist Party, and
hundreds of other Paraguayan patriots!
In recent years, two general sec-
retaries of the Guatemalan Party of
Labor, B. Alvarado Monzon and U. Al-
varado Arellano, were brutally killed in
quick succession in Guatemala. In
Brazil, leading members of the Com-
munist Party and the democratic opposi-
tion are disappearing without a trace in
prisons. In Argentina, the reactionaries

stopped and by the end of 1975 all
rivers that had been used as drift-
ing routes were thoroughly pur-

In late 1972 the cleaning of the
first of the former timber-drifting
routes, the River Ona (100 miles

long), was accomplished.

A year later local inhabitants
could see the practical results of
the work. For the first time in sev-
eral years fish from Baikal, includ-
ing the famous omul, came to.the
upper reaches of the River Ona
for spawning.

The number of Soviet rivers
saved from pollution increases

In three-and-a-half years al-
‘most 1,500 miles of river ‘banks
have been cleaned. The area of
Baikal water supply is now under
Strict protection and _ stringent
laws for the utilization of natural

dian Committee of Solidarity with Democratic Chile is conducting various public activities.

Maria insisted should go to her older sister, while she herself was happy with a bright red

demands an end to them.

tional liberation movement of Africa —
Amilcar Cabral, general secretary of the
Party of African Independence of
Guinea-Bissau and the Cape Verde Is-
lands, and Eduardo Mondlane, president
of the Front of National Liberation of
Mozambique — have lost their lives at

the hands of imperialist agents.

The racist regime rule over the peoples
of the South African Republic, Namibia
and Zimbabwe is a challenge to the con-
science of all mankind. Inhuman treat-
ment from jailers caused the death of
Bram Fisher, a distinguished humanist
and an unbending fighter against racism
and social injustice. Many leaders of the
Communist Party of South Africa, the
oldest Communist Party on the African
continent, are kept in prison in appalling
conditions. Disgrace upon the racists and
