A8 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, August 19, 1998 Say goodbye to the 737s CANADIAN AIRLINES is pulling ils Boeing 737 jet aircraft out of Terrace, ending more than 20 years of service by the two-engine workhorse to the northwest. Effective Oct. 25, Cana- dian Airlines is turning over its Vancouver-Terrace- Prince Rupert routes to sub- sidiary Canadian Regional Airlines, which mins the smaller Fokker F-28 jet. And while that may sound like bad news, it isn’t, says Canadian spokesman Karen Berkhout. “Canadian Regional will introduce three flights a day between Vancouver and Terrace and they won't be going to Prince Rupert,’ said Berkhout last week, “Prince Rupert will have its own flights and there will also be tree of these a day to Vancouver,” The 737 contains 100 seats, 12 of which are busi- ness class, while the F-28 has 55 seats, 10 of which are business class. The F-28 isn’t a strange aircraft to the north as it is the one used for Canadian’s afternoon runs during the summer. Canadian’s three flights a day on the Vancouver- Prince Rupert-Terrace tri; angle run in the summer were traditionally cut to two in the winter, **This is an increase in ca- pacity and service,’’ said Berkhout, ‘“‘Decause people will now have more of a choice with the winter schedule.” She said that while traffic had declined a little, the rea- son behind the change in aircraft rested with the greater operating efficiency offered by the F-28 com- pared to the B737. While that may be the case, one local travel agent thinks the change may end with competitor Air B.C. in- creasing its market share. “Now Air B.C, will be able to say it has the larger jet,” says Barb Kerr from Carlson-Wagonlit of that company’s Bae-146, “Passengers who flew Ca- nadian say they wanted the bigger plane.” Yet Kerr isn’t surprised that Canadian is pulling its 737° «service, saying the rumour has been around for years, ; “‘When you’re looking a costs, it was too expensive to operate so there’s a move to smallér aircraft which are more economical and need - TERRACE STANDARD - Business REvIEw © less crew,’’ she said. Canadian Regional has operated for several years between Vancouver and Smithers, using a Dash-8 aircraft on that run. Canadian spokesman Karen Berkhout did say Ca- nadian and Canadian Regional officials will be coming up to*Terrace to speak to airport employces affected by the change. Airline cuts north runs A SMITHERS-BASED air- line is pulling out of Terrace and other northern locations to expand into markets once covered by Air B.C. Beginning Oct. 5, Central Mountain Airlines will con- centrate on Vancouver and Calgary as hub connections to Air B.C. and Air Canada service. But to provide aircraft for new roules, the airline is cancelling service out of Terrace, Watson Lake in the Yukon, Dease Lake, Fort Nelson and Fort St. John, Central Mountain spokes- man Peter Byrnes describes the shift as a continuation of an agreement with Air B.C. two years ago to provide Under EBONY'S HIDDEN TREASURES Construction | www.ebonys.net !
