SEAR, SO aE ee ‘Seniors’ Fos OS - SGHVMay SSIOHO Eo OS~ SHOIOHD ANVW OS - SGHVM34 SOIOHO Many persons from the North choose to return to the South. The _ feason for this is unknown although a few theories do exist. One factor is the weather. a second factor is to be near their children, A final factor could be the lack of services for seniors. - By KEN VELDMAN Economic Dev. officer . HAVE THINGS changed since 1989? We still don’t _ have the temperate climate of Victoria, However, with : the creation of job op * portunities and the popula- _ tion growth of Terrace, ‘it can certainly be argued that _ more seniors are staying be- “cause their children have ’ slaved. And if the inventory . recently compiled by the ’ Terrace Seniors Advisory : Commission are any indica- tion, there has been a sub- stantial improvement in ser- vices for seniors. Since June 3-9 is Seniors * Week, il seems a good time to take a look at the changes in our city since 1989, Perhaps one of the greatest leaps that have been taken is in the field of medical ser. vices, particularly specialisls. These specialists have been actively recruited in order to improve the level _of medical service in the community. Terrace can now boast a lineup of eighteen medical Specialists based out of - Mills Memorial Hospital, as well as an opthamologist in Hazelton and an orthopedic surgeon in Kitimat. Along with the growth of Specialists, Mills has also Seen a growth in its special- ‘ized diagnostic equipment, such as the CAT Scan. As a result, northwest residents, especially seniors, can ac- cess these required services without having to travel to larger urban centres, Transportation for seniors took a great leap forward with the addition of the handyDART to the BC Transit service in Terrace in 1990. The handyDART is a custom transportation ser- vice using specially equipped vehicles, provid- ing door-to-door service to persons with disabilities or senior who cannol use regu- lar public transportation. The handyDART service is running at maximum ca- pacity, and a proposal is’ being pursued to add asec- - ond handDART vehicle. Help in the home is also available for those seniors who necd some additional support and assistance. Ter- race & District Community Services Society provides a number of programs benefiting seniors, including meal programs (Mcals-On- Wheels), homemaker’ ser- vices, home care nursing services and home care re- habilitation services. TDCSS also provides adult day care, an organized program of health, social and recreational activities for adults no longer able to care for themselves. On a less formal level, the Terrace Volunteer Bureau provides voluntcer ~suppart to seniors in the form of visitors, telephone © conlact and shopping services. The Volunteer Bureau also runs the Helping Handyman pro- gram to help seniors out around the house, On more of a social ievel, senior can also become in- volved with the Happy Gang Center, a drop-in centre for seniors offering social activities. The BC Seniors Games team is also very active in Terracé, and is always look- ing for new members. Many other facilities offer programs for seniors, in- cluding the Terrace Aquatic Centre's “‘Nifly Fifties Swim’’ and the public li- Terrace Economic Development Strategy, 1989 services growing brary’s Books-On- Wheels program. From 1986-1991, the 65 and over age category was the fastest growing segment of the. Terrace population. Duririg those five years, the age proup increased by 250 _people in Greater Terrace, a growth rate of 34 per cent, The results of the 1996 Census. should ‘tell’ us ‘if seniors are continuing to _ choose the north more often.
