For the tourism industry in the Nanaimo area the appropriate multiplier* to calculate the indirect impact is 1.08. In this case the number of employment hours directly created is 2,975 person hours. By applying the employment multiplier we can deduce that an additional 238 hours of employment were created in the Nanaimo area as an indirect result of the Festival. TOTAL EVENT ECONOMIC IMPACT The total event economic impact for the Nanaimo Maple Sugar Festival is $457,596. This number is the sum of the total visitor and organization expenditures ($351,997) and the indirect and induced impacts ($105,599). The total employment impact of the Nanaimo Maple Sugar Festival is 3,213 person hours or 459 person days. This number is a conservative estimate as additional person hours of employment are also created in the establishments visited by participants such as hotels and restaurants and other businesses that supply the Festival. * Ibid, p.27. The chosen multiplier includes only the indirect impact and not the induced impact. The decision was made to exclude the induced impact in this case because of the temporary nature of the employment created.
