(98 references) A review is presented of a series of studies on diseases of shellfish and finfish in estuaries suspected of or known t0- be polluced with organophosphorous and chlorinated hydro- carbon insecticides (chlordane, endrin, and DDT), oil, phe- nols, heavy metals and/or sewage. Diseases observed were lymphocystis, neoplasia, hyperplasia, sarous viral and hac- terial infections, as well as many parasitic infecuons insol ung helminths and protoczotns. The authors siale that pollutants —ecan cause disease directly, resulang to acute to chronic dts ease. Indirect causation can also occur, resulting (rom fish becoming weakened and having their defenses lowered. When this occurs, the animals become Cuinerable to parasites and other disease agents. The paper does not report cause and eHect relationships, nor does it relate speeic diseases to spe- ctlig pollutants, 79-0325. Newhouse, Mc McEvoy, D2 Rosenthal D. (Dep. Med.. (20 references) A 3% ald woman, who frequently worked with paraquat i orchards, was admitted ta the hospind after mi- bor scratches on her arms and less developed raised lesions, jeauding clear or bloody tuids Other symploms meiuded headache, breathlessness, chest tightness. anoresia and Pweight loss. Biopsy from the ulcerated lesions showed necro. sisotthe epidermis and dermis, Pulmonary function studies revealed moderate restrictive ventilatory defect. Within 14 days of topical therapy with Burrow's solution conmipeess and petroleum gauze, marked improvement was evident and she Was sent home. Seventeen duys later she was readmitted with symptoms of dyspnea, cough, fever, nausea/somiting, and new lesions. Progressive deterioration included hepatic and remil dysfuncuion, emtensive coagulative necrosis of the skin downto the fat, and respiratory fatlure. She died 12 days tater. Histropachological findings, together with similarities to previously described paraquat poisoning in animals pointed to pesticide poisoning. Studies have shown that paraquat is normally not inhaled to toxic doses during normal apphea- tion. Presumably only small quantities at uny one time were absorbed by the woman's skin, however, the cumulative doses may have been considerable. The long term interval between exposure and death may have been due to small doses and the route of entry of the pesticide. 79-0326. Mendelsohn. Hu: Paz, UL (Den.
