_ Drunk hunt boosted TERRACE —= The new genera- tion. of portable breath screening devices is here and police say it will mean a rougher ride for drunk drivers. The devices —- known as the S- L2 Alcolmeter —- fit in a pocket and are much smaller than the old ALERT roadside screening units. - They’ve been in use in the Lower Mainland for at least two years, but arrived in the northwest just last month. — Local police will also have more of the units available than it previously bad ALERTs. Cpl. Dave Pollock said RCMP plan to have four of the new units on the road al all times, A driver being tested blows into the mouthpiece, and the device lights up ‘Fail’ ‘Pass’ or ‘Ready’ depending on the blood-alcohol reading. The pass reading covers from about 50 to 100 mg of al- cohol per 100 mL of blood. The red ‘Fail’ reading triggers at any level above 100. “The yellow ‘Pass’ light fre- quently means a 24-hour suspen- sion. And if the red light goes off, the officer can demand the driver go to the detachment for a full breathalyzer test, A blow of more than 80 mg per 100 mL could: result in the laying of an impaircd driving charge. In the past, without a screening - device, officers had to have ‘reasonable = and probable grounds” that the driver is im- paired before making a demand to submit toa breathalyzer test. Coustable James ‘Walker says that usually meant the driver was fairly obviously drunk. With the screening units, all an officer needs is evidence that the driver has been drinking. A driver who admits having a drink can automatically “be screened, he said. That, Walker predicted, will result in the arrest of more. borderline impaired drivers who up until now haven’t been caught. . ‘That was one of the intentions — to target not just the obvious impaired, but also the ones that are going by undetected.”’ “The whole idea is to get the impaired driver off the road be- fore they hurt someone,’’ says Pollock... ns ar. may atho.do drink ang, drive.
