The report concludes there is an in- creased risk of lung cancer to workers with many years of exposure to tars. The company noted that over the past two decades, measures have been in- troduced which have greatly improved working con- ditions and minimized possible health risks. The plans were disclosed by Francois Senecal- Tremblay, Vice President and General Manager - Reduction Division, while informing employees and government and union of- ficials of the contents of the study. Specifically the company will continue to use the best _ agreement technology. to step up existing programs for improving working con- ditions, particulart: where health risks have mn in- dicated. The company further intends to make mandatory the wearing of face masks in work areas where tar emissions are present, Mr. Senecal-Tremblay said Alcan is seeking expert advice on the best means of early detection of lung cancer and will encourage employees to reduce or eliminate smoking in the light of its acknowledged relationship with overail lung problems. THE McGILL REPORT The present McGill report is based on a study begun in 1974 which examined the lung cancer mortality rate of a working population of 5,891 Alcan smelter workers in Quebec between 1950 and 1973, Of the total, 5,406 worked in the company’s Arvida and Isle Maligne smelters and 485 at the Shawinigan smelter. Lung cancer mo reached with the McGill University Department of Epidemlology and Health which would enable an ongoing study of lung cancer mortality among Alcan smelter workers, statistics, of which can be compared against provincial national averages. In order to relate this information to the situation at the Kitimat plant, Works Manager Bill Rich made the following comments: “The Kitimat smelter is newer and different in many and. ways from those in Quebec and its workforce was not included in the study, This was primarily because of the relatively small number of long service employees continuously exposed to tars. . “The tar fumes referred to in the McGill Study are present in the Kitimat smelter since similar materials are used in the : process. However, the time- weighted average exposure of our employees is at the approximate level of the most modern high ven- tilation potlines referred to in the press release. “Nevertheless, some of the planned action items may have a direct ap- plication here. For example, the mandatory wearing of masks in the areas of tar exposure will likely be extended here as a precautionary measure. “We are, of course, communicating the results of the study and _ its tecommendations to all of our employees. It is our rtality in aluminum plant workers intention to thoroughly review the study with the ‘union via a joint union-— en- management vironmental committee and we may well develop some joint action programs with the union directed par- ticularly at Kitimat” COMPANY POSITION - Jn releasing the results of the study the company made known a number of actions it was taking in view of the conclusions in the , Teport. It will continue and ‘ where possible, peetarie its ongoing program of u: the e best available technology, especially in the higher exposed jobs, reduce as far- as possible those emissions which can be considered suspect. The _wearing of the most efficient * respiratory protective equipment will be made mandatory in all tar ex- posed occupations. An agreement has been made with University to continue the MeGill - study indefinitely so that the eompany have the data required for a constant monitoring of morbidity and mortality statistics of active and retired employees for comparison with provincial and national experience, Expert advice is being sought by the company on the most recent, acceptable and proven methods of early - detection of lung cancer. In addition, because of the well known reinforcing effect cigarette smoking has. on any lun enease: the company in o strongly encourage its employees to reduce or stop smoking. - Dairyland Milk in the new Pitcher-Pak replaces the old 3-quart milk carton, contains approximately 17% more milk!
