City doorbells ring for PT sub renewals _ “Hastings East press builders are leading the city accord- ing to reports turned in so far on Tuesday’s ‘Renewal Night’ campaign to re-enroll hundreds of old subscribers to the Pacific Tribune,” Fel Ashton, PT business manager, reported this week. “Ten press builders turned out in that district and signed up ten subscribers. That's a good night's work,” she said. ‘Nigel Morgan, chairman of the Press: Builders’ Committee, went ‘out to Moberley district and per- Sonally obtained a couple of re- newals, that one of them had married . another subscriber. That’s the only good reason we've heard of yet for not renewing. “Seven canvassers hit the streets with Hardld Pritchett in Norquay, and there was a big turnout in the West End, where Victory Square came over to lend a hand. “Apart from the actual number of subs gained, which we're very glad to see, ‘Renewal Night’ was a big success because a lot of friends have told us that now they’ve broken the ice they’re all set to pick up renewals regularly. Some say that whenever they can’t get a renewal they'll get a re- placement in the form of a new subscriber. That sounds like a good challenge. “Maurice Rush led nine press builders who rang doorbells in Grandview. Out of five homes he visited himself he won back three old readers, and reports “There are still several hundred subs to renew in B.C. before we start our campaign for new readers in October.; But with the kind of spirit shown by those who joined in ‘Renewal Night’ there’s every WOOL GABARDINE SUITS REG. $65.00 prospect of us being able to double LABOR WEEK SPECIAL our circulation by next spring. It’s $49.50 certain that those new readers will be a big help in electing Effie Jones as mayor of Vancouver and a CCF government at_ Victoria.” 54 W. Cordova — TA. 2657 1% Blk. Portable mill operators, working in districts not found prof- itable by big operators, were find- ing their future threatened by the middleman’s toll. With the ex- ample of the successful co-op store before them, they studied facts and figures on the possibility of organ- izing a co-op to guard the interests of the small millowners. Three years of successful operation have shown the correctness of the step and demonstrated the possibilities ‘The Co-op now has 35 members, each with a vote and a $50 share, and in accordance with co-op prin- ciples, its directors are elected at an annual membership meeting. The Co-op now has a yard, a planer, trucks, buildings and office at Burns Lake, and employs a staff of 22. So far 7,000,000 feet of lumber has been sold to other co-ops, large- ly Canadian. Foreign shipments go to the Indiana Farm Bureau, which in turn distributes to other co-ops south of the line. The early trials, worries and set- backs now seem small compared to the members’ satisfaction at get- ting higher prices and managing their own affairs, Pioneer members pay tribute to a man who for years has helped and guided co-ops in northern B.C. —George Edgar. His devotion in management laid the foundations for.a successful co-op. 1948 Labor Day Greetings “ “DE LUXE COFFEE SHOP 420 Homer Street Vancouver, B.C.
