The tree will be going up tomorrow in the Skeena Mall, and on Friday children from the centre -will be put- ling special - decorations they've made on it. The community and local businesses then have a chance to purchase a light for the tree. Lights cost be- tween $2-50 for individuals and $10-100 for businesses. All proceeds go towards providing therapy arid ser- vices to children with spe- cial needs. a “We're really thankful for the community's support,” says Margot Hayes of the centre. “‘And it’s gotten bet- ter every single ycar,”’ she says, referring to the grow- ing donations, -- Kids helped by Tree of Lights In the third year, in 1989, | the community donated $2,654. In 1991 that figure grew to $3,211, And: last year people — contributed $6,372. ; The money helps buy all the extras not budgeted for in the four contracts the centre has with government ministries. Those extras range from specialized equipment and testing kils to money to help keep the centre's bus run- ning. The centre serves over 200 children whose development has been delayed in some fashion. The Child Development Centre is also a regional resource. Families come from = Prince ~— Rupert, Kitimat, Hazelton and up lake part in programs, There are also outreach visits, so nurses can see children in their homes. Ralph Rintisch and his family moved to Terrace from Burnaby. Their previous pastorages were in the Okanagan and in Saskatchewan. “We wanted to get back into a smaller com- munity,” said Ralph of the decision to move to Ter- Face, “It’s more personal. You get to know your neigh- bours. It’s much more friendly and trusting.’’ Ralph’s wile Brenda plans to be quite busy in Ter- race, She wants to open a home-based business in the new year. Called Behind the Picket Fence, the busi- ness will feature folk art. In the meantime Brenda will be teaching a few classes at the local craft stores, The couple have three children, aged six to 14, They’re enrolled at Centennial Christian School. When nol busy with activities in the church and school, Ralph says the family enjoys outdoors ac- tivities, in particular riding dirt bikes.
