Teer: ee Gee better place to start with than speedskating? = * Speedskating has been pro- viding thrills for humans since | man first strapped animal bones to his feet and slid across and icy patch of ground. However in a more recognizable form, it is said that speedskating dates back to the twelfth century in Holland. Then as now it was one of the most popular, out- door. activities in the Netherlands and. it is not sur- prising that after the sport was introduced to the United States, . Canada and the Scandinavian countries during the nineteenth century, the first World Cham-- pionships i in speedskating were held in Amsterdam in 1893, Men’s speedskating was in-. cluded in the first Winter Olym- pics. in 1924, but it. was’ 1964 before an event for women was . included (a - definite double- "bladed standard!), 1g SOO In speedskating, two skaters at a time race counterclockwise fround a track,. There are five events for men and four events for women. The object is to achieve. the fastest time. in all events and so become the overall winner. Arena tracks are approximately 400 metres long and five metres wide... Skaters are required to change lanes after each circuit in an event. Each competitor must wear an arm band — white for the skater starting in the in- ner land-and red for the com- petitor in the outside lane. The skates used are generally a low backed boot with long narrow blade reinforced with steel tub- ing. With our modern alloy blades and full body suits. we have changed a great deal from cave man days or even those of Hans Brinker. But the thrill. of the sport has not changed and I know that many of you will be looking forward to attending the speedskating competitions being held in the Kitimat and Terrace arenas during the Nor- thern B.C. Winter Games. ‘Another instance of Kitimat and Terrace cooperating to make them both terrific.
