On July 2, an open house was held at the Prusko home in Gossan Creek sub- division. There was lots of story telling and reminiscing on these.occa- sions, Steven Basaraba of Ter- “race, a grandson, prepared ‘‘Leon and Jennie, a Brief History’’, which he read at the Saturday evening banquet. ‘When Leon was just six years old,” he read, “little Jennie was born to Joe and Mary Zayonc in the small farm town of Smokey Lake, Alberta. After almost 18 years in Poland, sometime after most of his family was there (there’s another story there), Leon moved to Smokey Lake; it was October, 1933. There he met Joe Zayonc. He began to associate with Joe because Joe was a good hunter. One fateful night at a Christmas concert at the. Cossack school, Joe intro- duced his two daughters, Jennie and Wanda, to Leon. Little did Joe know that it was Leon who ‘was the good hunter.’’ Eventually Jennie agreed to marry: the persistant Leon on June 25, 1939. They have four children: Tillie Trigg, the eldest; Martha, married to Steve Basaraba of Terrace; and Regina and Leon Jr., both of Terrace. Leon and Jennie lived on her father’s farm during the war, but times were tough, so for a brief spell, the new husband _came out to Prince Rupeft to work on the docks for a dollar an hour. ; On a second visit to B.C., he fell in love with the province and after the war, he decided to move his family out. By this time, they had a livery stable in | Smokey Lake, Alberta. After . selling everything, the family headed west to Vancouver. In April 1952, they arrived in this area; Leon had hoped to get a job in the new Alcan plant at Kitimat. Instead, in Terrace, he found plenty of .work as a carpenter, a trade he had developed over the years. Jennie had experience in housekeeping and bakery work and eventually became employed by the Skeenaview Home for the Aged ‘for 18 years. They have both now retired. Their grandson writes that “Leon and Jennie are kept busy chasing chickens, feeding hum-- mingbirds .and. growing vege- tables for their kids, grandkids and neighbors, In 50 years of “matriage, one can easily see their accomplishments by the love, laughter and happiness shared among the entire family.’” ‘Fae Mooney —_ continued from page 18 ing what you like. _ Refinement and sophistica- tion are evident in the elegant dresser.
