Barrett offers his
services to breweries

VANCOUVER (CP) — The

British Columbia brewing
industry has turned down
Opposition leader Dave
Barreit’s offer to act as
mediator in the twomonth-
old beer industry contract
dispute.
. Eric Harris, chief
negotiater for the Brewery
Employers Labor Relations
Association, said in a news
release “there's no néed for
further Involvement at this
time."

The Canadian Union of
United Brewery, Flour,
Cereal, Soft Drink and
Distillery Workers had
accepted the offer which
Barrett made last Thursday.

Harris also said the B.C.
Labor Relations Board
contacted him “to say they
were not making themselves
available in the dispute”,
contrary to a statement last
Friday by ution spokeaman
John Langley who said the
board might call the partles

complaints from both sides

The trial of independent
Shefford MP Gilbert Ron-
deau on charges of arson and
conspiracy got under way
Tuesday in this Eastern
Townships community after
a number of (delays.

Rondeau, 50, faces trial by
Sessions Court Judge Louis
Bouchard in connection with
a Dec. 20, 1675, fire which

partially destroyed a
building he owned In nearby
Bromont.

Jean Bernier, 23, charged

‘with a single count of arson

in connection with the fire,
told the court he set the
blaze.

“We went to burn the
house,” he said, referring to
Jacques Harbec, who is co-
accused with Rondeau on the
same charaes,

Bernier, who testified at a
fire commission inquiry last
year, also told the court that
Rondeau aproached him
after the inquiry and asked
him to change his version of
how the fire started.

Bernier said he had pre-
viously pleaded guilty to
charges of fraud and

breakingand-ontering and
was fined $1,000, He anid
Rondeaw offered to pay his
fine, but later said the fine
was paid by his mother.
Bernier nas pleaded not
guilty to the arson charge.
He faces trial Sept, it.
Other testimony at the
trial showed that Rondeau
had a $30,000 insurance
policy on the house and that
he owed $370.29 In school
taxes and $587.57 in
municipal taxes. He also
owed interest of $58.78 on the
municipal tax bill,

herbicide 2,4-D near the site
of a proposed $1 million
salmon replenishment
project.

Hydro plans to spray 2,4-D to
control alder and other

forced to retire at any age,
British Columbia Labor
spokesmen said Monday in
response to Senator David
Croll's announcement that
the mandatory retirement
age in Canada will be raised
to at least 70 from 65 next

year,

George Johnson, president
of the B.C, Federation of
Labor said while his
organization hag no official

Johnson said also “when
people do retire, there should
be an adequate pension, and
I think we've got a long way

Bert Brooker, pension fund
administrator for the Inter-
national Union of Operating
Engineers, Local 115, said
the move to a_ higher
retirement age was a
“deliberately orchestrated
attempt on the part of
pension f funds to save a lot of
money.”

He said pension funds
would benefit because people
working to age 70 instead of
65 would be contributing to
the pension fund rather than
drawing from it for the five
extra years

Brocker said also that the
move will detrimentally
affect younger people
seeking work.

However, he said, there
shouldn't be any mandatory
retirement age, but older
people should be encouraged
to retire, Brooker said.
