TO: Mayor and Aldermen August 24th, 1972 FROM: Alderman P.F,. Ranger (* A i i Al ( PTFoitTo Re: Friends of the Library AUG 28 1972 Z would like to take this opportunity to point out te Council, several valid reasons for advocating the creation of a Friends of the Library organization. Firstly, the Fraser Valley Regional Library District consists of twenty- three governmental units: four cities, one town, two villages, eleven district municipalities and flve rural areas of school districts. One representative from each of these units sits on the Eoard of Managemont which meets in Abbotsford headquarters four times a year. An Alderman usually represents civic governments since there is cn expenditure of municipal taxea involved. Since we are elected “>, officials and since the appointed member can be changed by the Mayor each year, it seems desirable to maintain some continuity between the Library administration and the local citizenry. I think a Friends of the Library Organization could help bridge that gap. Secondly, Friends can carry out library pubiictty programmes, sponsor cultural activities (story hours, ete.), reflect the public view to Council's representative, assist as volunteers to library staffs, arrange special displays, and sponsor fund-raicing evento to help acquire nateriais beyond the confines of the Library budget. To meet these ends, the widest general membership should be encouraged. If this preposal meets with your approval, I would place advertising in the local papers calling for interested people to attend an organizational meeting. Sincerely, Alderman Phil Ranger. =
