B10 Terrace Review — Wednesday, January 23, 1991 Kitwanga planer ‘mill back in action After overcoming cold weather problems early in the month the Westar Timber planer mill in Kit- wanga is now up and running for one full time shift. . The mill had been shut down in May of last year due to long-term sawlog shortages, but the Minister of Forests instructed Westar to put the mill’s workforce back on the job or face penalties involving its forest tenures in the Kispiox Tim- ber Supply Area. Westar official Reg Thurlbom said the start-up was difficult due to extraordinarily low temperatures and wind-chill in early January, coupled with the fact that the mill hadn’t been winterized after it was shut down last year. The mill ran _ for half of the day Jan. 7, but the crew was sent home due to un- - coinfortable working conditions and ‘mechanical problems in the plant. A small crew remained on the job, attempting to get the mill and building in running order. The planer started full time Jan. 14, pulting 27 people back to work. To comply with the terms of the minister’s letter, Westar will have to add a second shift to the planer mill in March and restart full pro- duction at the main sawmill in September. Thurlborn noted that the letter instructs Westar to restore full employment of the Kitwanga workforce, and that the company has the option of creating employment through means other than the mill operation if it can come up with a plan that the ministry will accept. The problem that originally prompted the mill closure, insuffi- cient timber to feed both the Kit- wanga mill and the newer Carnaby -mill in Hazelton, still remains. The ministry offered Westar no new timber, and Thurlborn said Jan. 18 Games representative Maria Thomsen. Wilkinson Business Machines became a patron of the 1991 Northem Terrace with the donation of $5,000 last week, presented by Bob Wilkinson and received by B.C. Winter Games in that the situation hasn’t changed. 5 ‘Where To Find It’ v Terrace Tree Trimming Will cut down any tree!
