Veterans have a particular contribution to make toward peace and international exchanges among them can go a long way towards promoting arms control, repre- sentatives of Canadian and Soviet vete- Tans agreed at a press reception for a visiting Soviet delgation Nov. 15. The four-member delegation, which arrived in Vancouver Friday for a four- day visit, included Dimitry Zabrodin, deputy minister of education of the Russian Federation; Kirill Kavun, a geologist; Vas- ily Zagoruyko, deputy mayor of Odessa; and Igor Serediuk, the deputy mayor of Lvov. Although not all of them were veterans, their extensive itinerary included a number of meetings with Canadian vete- Tans and members of Veterans for Multi- lateral Disarmament as well as meetings with civic officials in White Rock, Surrey and Vancouver and the deputy minister of education in Victoria, and a wreath-laying Ceremony at Victory Square. Their stay in this country also included visits to Win- hipeg, Toronto and Montreal. Among those welcoming them in Van- couver was Col. Norman Hoye, a leading B.C. member of Veterans for Multilateral Disarmament and a veteran of the bomber group stationed in London dur- ing the Second World War. He told reporters that veterans in both countries were “growing closer together -. because people all over the world are Tealizing that they all face the same threat of nuclear war and we've all got to do Something to stop it.” Zabrodin, a partisan in Central Russia during the war, also noted that they had found “great hopes and expectations” among Canadians about the upcoming Summit between U.S. president Ronald peegan and Soviet leader Mikahil Gorba- chev, That feeling echoes the sentiments of Soviets, he said, who “hope the talks will lead to positive shifts in the relationship between the U.S. and the USSR.” It was towards that end that the Soviet Union “undertook great obligations in the efforts to achieve disarmament,” he said, cesses Veterans echo summit hope Soviet visitors Kirill Kavun (top, right) and Dimitry Zabrodin talk with Canadian veteran Col.
