ry i _ Organizing seniors’ tea just | -one of many contributions | Saying thank you to Elsie Hull — kind, beautiful lady SEVEN YEARS ; ago, a tea for seniors was started at the Terrace Pentecostal Assembly at 3511 Eby “Street( as a church outreach) by Elsie Hull. The tea was organized by Elsie back in 1998. The ; idea for a seniors’ tea came to mind after a visit to Ter- raceview Lodge for Fred - Gibbs’ 90th birthday. Elsie at the time thought, wouldn’t it be nice to have more get- togethers like this more of- ten?. . HERE ‘N THERE YVONNE MOEN Elsie went home and thought more about this idea and she approached the church for its permission to possibly start holding a se- niors’ tea every month. Now - after seven years and 84 teas later, the event has proven to be very successful and certainly much appreciated - by. many. What a wonderful get-together and thanks to Elsie and all.the wonderful volunteers who make it all possible. The seniors’ tea is held every third Wednesday: of the month at the Terrace Pentecostal Assembly at 2 p.m. ‘Now, I would like to ‘tell you just a little about Elsie - ‘Hull! Elsie Hull, nee Crego, was born July 12, 1930 in Detroit Mich. to parents “William and Millicent (. , Millie) Crego. A family of four children, Mr. and Mrs. Crego were Salvation Army officers in Detroit and while they lived in the Motor City their second child, son Char- lie, was born Aug. 7, 1928. When the children were still young and during the depres- — sion years, Mr. And Mrs. Crego decided to leave the Salvation Army and made a move to Vancouver, B.C. In Vancouver, Mr. Crego found a job selling Watkins products. While living in Vancouver, two more chil- dren were born, daughters Millie July 26, 1936 and Dorothy October 23, 1933. In 1939, Mr. Crego got a job working as a mechanic at the Carlisle Fishing Cannery for the summer months, and while there he was offered a full-time job and the family lived there until.1945. In 1944, while the Crego family was living at the Car- lisle Cannery, Dudley Little, Ralph Mathews and George Hull came to have’a look at an old boiler for the L. H & K sawmill in Terrace. And while talking to Mr. Crego, ‘they convinced him to move ~ his family to Terrace. By this time the Crego ~ children were getting older | and needed better schooling. ...§ They were told by the men that Terrace had everything they needed. Mrs. Crego lat- er came to Terrace to’ have a look around and imme- — diately fell in love with the area. She bought 11.5 acres of land with a house, two. cabins from Dorothy Juls-— eth’s parents, the Martins, for $2,000 (many people in _ Terrace remember this place as the “Fraser Place’). After: Mrs.” Crego had everything settled, she then ‘went back to the cannery ‘to tell the family she had bought. some land anda house-for them to move to. But then at the time of the move, Mrs: Crego had got word from her parents back in Michigan that they need- ed her help, so the four chil- dren had to make the move on their own. They left Car-. lisle Cannery at the end of ’ September and travelled by ‘boat to Haysport, then by- train to Terrace: arriving at 12:30am. - Daughter Elsie tells of the move: she said when’ they arrived in Terrace, the Mar- tins were still living in the big house, so the children. had to set up house in the little one-room cabin. Elsie remembers all they had was whatever they brought with them — no’furniture, pots and pans or dishes. All they had in the cabin was a little round heater with a lid on the top, ~ which was used for cooking and heating the place. They slept and sat on the floor to eat their. meals. Life in their new surroundings was rather ; difficult at first. After being on their own for a while, their father came to join them. Mr. Crego got >° ELSIE Hull, right, rests at a recent senior’ tea with long- time friend Mildred (Frank) Wood.. Hull has organized the weekly tea at Terrace Pentacostal Assembly since 1998. The Crego’s grew a large garden, had a cow, » pigs and raised angora rab- bits. And, of course, for the ., Children to attend school was very close. Elsie said at this time she was still in school, she found a part-time job work- ing at the bakery for Mr.. McInnes on Kalum Street at ‘the old Terrace Drugs loca- ‘tion, which later moved to Lakelse Avenue and became Ann Sites Bakery. Elsie also worked at the telephone of- fice asa telephone operator. Eventually, Elsie’ met the man of her dreams, Don Hull. Elsie and Don Hull were married Sept. 7, 1949 in the’ Terrace Pentecostal Church on Lakelse Avenue, a marriage of 56 years. But sadly her beloved: husband Don Hull passed way Nov. ¢ 21, 2004. Don and Elsie raised a-family of five chil- dren: Lloyd, Donna, Gor- don, Norman and Alien. Elsie is now resting and | trying to keep comfortable, . fighting the terrible sickness. of cancer. At this time, on’ behalf of everyone, I would like to say thank you to Elsie Hull for her idea of the se- niors’ tea and thank you for being so thoughtful, The first few years of the tea, Elsie and Don Hull sup- ‘plied everything, with Elsie doing all the baking. When the ‘seniors’ tea first started Nov. 19, 1998, 23 seniors came out. That number rose to 120 — this year 95 seniors attending. ° a _..
