Locals to keep eye
on selective fishery

gillnetters hope to avoid
endangered coho and estab-
lish a sustainable food or
commercial fishery,

Still, the sport fishery ad-
visory board is skeptical the
study, which uses trained lo-
cals to idenlify and record
the catch, can be objective.

The observers are ex-
commercial fishermen, said
Culp.

“The study has to be ab-
solutely, squeaky clean,
with no biases,” said Culp.

He added the board ‘is in
favour of selective fishing,
bul, he said, the risk to
endangered stacks is high.

“If it’s not successful they
could end up catching upper
Skeena coho,” he said.
“We'll be watching this
study.’?

The federal Department of
Fisheries and Oceans (DFO)
manager on (he north coast,
David Einarson, says study
will involve 40 vessels and
will be broad enough to tell
if observers aren’t recording
the catch accurately.
