Spike Gehlhausen hit the wall just when the first wave of reqular pit stops began, Some of the contenders, like Johnny Rutherford and Sneva, made their stops before the yellow. Krisilctf, Ongals, and Johncock waited and were able to make service stops during the slowdown. Mario Andretti's charge from 33rd spot stopped as goon as he reached toe top 10, just a3 kilometres into the race, having used the caution flags to his ad- vantage. Awire wentdead, shutting his motor off. It was changed, but he was out of contention by then and continued to drop back with engine problems. Sneva had trouble syn- chronizing his pit stops with the race’s six caution flags,’ something which Unser did better.
