A6 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, March 27, 2002 Letters to the editor Can’t be tolerated Dear Sirt RE: “SCI unloads on Prince Rupert Pulp Union,” The Terrace Stan- dard, March 20, 2002. I feel compelled to re- spond to the comments made by NWBC president Daniel Veniez. Mr. Veniez's comments cannol go unchallenged. By not being personally impacted nor involved in the discussions between PPWC Local 4. and NWEC regarding the sale of SCI, I cannot endorse the position as put forth by the Jeadership of the PPWC Local 4. However, the draconian comments put forth by Mr. Veniez will do nothing to ensure the stability of this operation for the future. Veniez’s tactics of inti- midaling workers, the community and contractors can only lead to signif- icant instability and a dis- astrous labour relations climate for the future. To imply any worker or union is willing to turn themselves into a pretzel to meet his company’s needs is not only an insult to the union, but is an in- sult to workers as a whole. I have been closely in- volved in a situation in Yellowknife where an owner took over a mine and utilized similar intimi- dator tactics as Veniez is employing. The result was a disas- ter. An eighteen-month bit- ter strike ensued. There Disgusted by gov't treaty vote plan Dear Sir: i am deeply disgusted by the provincial govern- ment’s decision to hold a treaty referendum. It seems to me that the treaty pro- cess should be one which succeeding governments are obligated to pick up, uncontested, from where the previous administration left off. Ruling after ruling by the Supreme Court has left no doubt as to the funda- mental principles underly- - ing aboriginal title. Since Bill Vander Zalm and the Socreds agreed to sit down and negotiate treaties in B.C, 12 years ago, little propress has been made to settle the le- gitimate, longstanding grievances of aboriginal people in this province and I believe the results of the referendum will be used by the provincial government to side step its responsibil- ity to negotiate in good faith. In recent weeks, the provincial government has shown us that their name on the bottom of a contract is meaningless. It is a re- lief to know that First Na- tions in this province can seek redress through the Supreme Court as the Haida have decided to do. The treaty referendum is a violation of constitu- tional guarantees of abori- ginal rights and should be given the pink slip. Liza Haldane, Terrace Women's Resource Centre, Terrace, B.C. With the current vola- tile economic uncerlain- ties impacting on all com- munities and workers, Ve- niez’s draconian, intimida- tion all or nothing style of management cannot be to- lerated.
