Wednesday, August 14, 1991 SPORTS | Riverboat Days match pays $1,600 top prize A sparkling five-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning earned Westpoint Rentals $1,600 first prize money at the annual Riverboat Days men’s slo-pitch softball tournament. On the championship side’s double-knockout windup, Westpoint won ‘A’ side with victories over Terrace Inn and SKB Molsons, after opening with a bye. Meanwhile, Prince George Video Pop beat Skeena Hotel on ‘A’ side, but then lost to SKB to drop to ‘B’ side. They took ‘B’ side on straight wins over Terrace Inn, Skeena Hotel and SKB. That put them in the big money final against Westpoint where they had to win two in arow to take the title. From all appearances, Video was headed for a game one victory. They moved into a 9-3 lead and fans were counting on a second game. But the undefeated Westpoint guys got a second wind and charged back. By the seventh and last inning, Video had an 11-7 margin. . That’s when Westpoint rallied to plate their five runs and count a 12-11 win. Video Pop blew the big prize but still managed to take home the runnerup $1,000 prize. SKB wound up in third place — good enough for $600. Fourth place money of $400 went to Skeena Hotel. On the consolation side of the 12-team tourney, [ronhorse of Prince George downed Rudon 7-3 to take top prize of $400, Rudon went home with $200. WEST ALL THE MARBLES. Injured knee keeps Christensen Bike racer Mike Christensen of Terrace is grounded for a while to get treatment on his left knee. The B.C. team member injured the knee while mountain biking just before the Skeena Valley Triathlon in July. Although painful, he entered the triathlon and came up a prize-winner with his team mates. _ The triathlon aggravated the bruised knee and he left Terrace to resume his racing career at Langley in late July. Mike and fellow Terracite Chiron Kantakis took in the 130-K Langley event, but Mike had to bow out due to his knee problem. Chiron entered and placed a respectable 28th. Both riders then headed for the Bolton tops men’s open in Kitimat ‘Dave Bolton Jr, returned home to familiar surroundings from Vancouver on August 4 weekend to win Kitimat’s annual men’s Hirsh Creek Open golf tournament. ' Bolton shot a 54-hold score of 222 in the three-day event to grab overall low gross honours. The averatl low net went to Jari Yrkki of Kitimat with a 212 effort. dn the championship flight, Tetrace’s Dan Rosengren came up with low gross honours while Ron Venman of Kitimat shot the low net. ‘A’ flight winners were Mike Steponavicius for gross and Vic Bernard for net. For ‘B’ flight it was Augie Penner and Kari Juustila for gross and net, respectively. Tony Ferreira won gross and Lance Berrisford Jr. took net in ‘C’ flight. Mike thought he’d give it a try, but 45 kilometres into the 150-K road race his knee gave out. So, Mike came home and is getting the injured limb treated. He hopes it will be well in time for the B.C. road race championships in Penticton at the end ofthis month. As for Chiron, he fared poorly off track in the climbing event, but held his own with top riders in the criterium. Chiron is looking ahead to the Skeena River 150-K challenge from Prince Rupert on August 18.
