ARTHUR GELLERT, THE FUTURE BEFORE us “And it shall come to Pass, ‘ when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow shall be seen in the . eloud.” Genensis 9:14 | Most readers will know the back- ground of this text. Fhe catastro- phe of the flood had overwhelmed the godless and self-destructive world. Only a feeble ark and those inside it had escaped. These few survivors are extremely Jonely in the waste of the vast and silent world slowly emerging from the fatal deluge. But against all ex- pectation the goodness of God is not yet at an end even when men are, and even when the world has been brought to the destruction by the flood. God still has a plan for this bankrupt world. As we have entered a New Year and are gazing into the future, let us be mindful that we have no promise that our earth will be paradise, We have no promise that reason will always prevail or that men will be angels. If we believe this, we do not get it from the Bible. However, what we can he- lieve Is that all that happens, re- gardless how dreadful, will carry with it God’s blessing. His geraci- ous, hidden hand will be with us. Above all the terrors which may, or may not engulf us, will stand the gracious ark or His mercy. Perhaps all that .I have -built.today..will be swept away tomorrow. Or, it may be something very different. Per- haps the Jove which I have for someone else, and which is happily returned, will grow cold, and the moment of bliss which I would like to hang on to will pitilessly fade. On the other hand, I may have no specific fear. My life thay take a fairly regular course. But life is so incalculable and the future is so ‘obscure, Even if we have no par- ticular fear, we often worry about the very future. In such eases we speak of fear of life. But it is here, that the text quoted above, offers us Toyal consolation and encourage- ment, For God says: “I am the One who causes the clouds to pass over the earth.” Hence what is at work is not a blind fate or chance. A hand is stretched over. the clouds, and it is the hand of God, and it is His hand alone which assigns to cloud and air and wind their path and course, All things, therefore, will turn out for good, For the hand which is here at work is the same hand which allowed itself to be pierced and nailed to the cross; it is the same hand which rested in bless- ing on the heads of the children and which healed sick bodies; it is the same hand which stretches forth in majesty and can command the wind and the waves, so that the lake instantly becomes a silver mirror and the storm a requicken- ing breath. For this reason, Christians can always face the future with con- fidence. And because they look for this hand, they can not be terroriz- ed with fear. They know no more than others what will come, but they do know Him who controls whatever will come. Do you?
