The brief cautioned the minister
of labor against reducing the level
of service in area offices and. op-
posed transferring the accident
prevention and industrial hygiene
departments from the Workers’
Compensation Board to the other
government departments.

The brief criticized the ap-
pointment of P.S. Ross & Partners,
Management Consultants, to study
the jurisdiction of the Workers’
Compensation Board and
demanded input consultation on
the selection of a new board
chairperson.

The Federation warned against
the appointment of anyone as the
chairperson of the Board who has a
management background, and
charged that employers’
organizations in the past few
months have been exerting a
substantial negative influence on
the Board.

“The workers of the province
produce the wealth of the province,
not the employers, and pay for that
production with risks to their
health and lives. The Federation of
Labor will not accept any em-
ployer initiatives to cut back on
compensation levels in British
Columbia and warned that a full
scale confrontation with em-
ployers’ organizations is in the
offing and if these initiatives are
not rejected by the government,”
said the the brief.

CORRECTION

Last week’s edition of the Pacific
Tribune mistakenly reported that
Bill 16, the province’s wage control
legislation, was passed by the
Legislature. In fact, the bill was
only given first reading after which
opposition leaders outlined their
party’s positions on the proposed
legislation.

The Tribune wishes to apologize
for any difficulties which the error
may have caused.

That voice belongs to the Pacific
Tribune. It has consistently been
the only weekly newspaper which
speaks for and in the interests of
‘working people. It fights on our
behalf week in and week out, 52
weeks per year, and each year the
Tribune asks us to fight on its
behalf during its financial drive.

|! urge all of the Tribune's
readers, trade unionists, pensioners,
tenants, and students to take up the
fight on behalf of the Tribune. Give
generously during the Tribune’s
financial drive, because in the long
run you are supporting your own
interests through a strong Tribune.

May Day marks four weeks of our annual financial drive. Traditionally it is a check
point on the progress of the drive, and this year we have $13,500 in on our quota of

$40,000.

That is not nearly enough as with only six weeks left until our victory banquet we
have to find another $26,500.

Some clubs are doing very well, particularly Vancouver East, Surrey, Mission, North
Shore and the SFU Club, all of which have raised well over % of their targets. Other clubs
are lagging well behind, and in some cases we have yet to hear from them. We are
appealing to these clubs to pick up their feet and get the drive going in their areas.

To date we have three members of the 400 Club, three people who have raised over
$400 each — Mike Stevens, Steve Nickyforuck and Rita Tanche. There must be more
potential members of that club out there somewhere. Let's hear from you. In any case,
are you doing enough to see that the drive is successful? Have you made your donation,
