A10 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, October 1, 1997 APEC tour here A ROADSHOW promot- ing B.C,’s hosting of the Asia Pacific Economic Conference hits Terrace this week, The Asia Pacific Con- nections interactive mul- timedia display opens at the Skeena Mall at 1:15 p.m on Thursday and will be on display there through the weekend. It aimed at promoting B.c.’s involvement in hosting the conference Nov. 19-25 in Van- couver. The province is target- ting youth, business and multicultural groups with the tour in the hopes of raising awareness of the Asia Pacific region. The APEC conference has been likened to trade meetings with 18 Pacific Rim countries all rolled into one. An estimated 10,000 goverment officials, business leaders and media are expected to at- tend. Premicr Glen Clark, at the Jaunch of the Connec- tions tour Sept. 11, ad- mitted rural British Columbians might not be moved by the APEC con- ference in Vancouver. But Clark said B.C. was the only province that did not have a recession in the 1990s because of its proximity to strong Asian economies, The Connections tour is on a 10-city tour across B.C. tat ends in Novem- ber in Vancouver with the start of the confer- ence. ] TERRACE INN WHAT'S — HAPPENING AUGIE’S | G 473 J e eas Wednesday Night Only Jazz Poachers Prime Rib. ‘Fridays $6. 95 | 4:8 pm: eee Thursday, Friday & Saturday Enjoy the Music of Human Nature | Jess Baia —Praaants DHE EORSS Games & Prizes Nightly! Martyr Brown, executive director of the Citizens’ Voice on Native Claims, toured the northwest last week in an elfort to drum up more support for the fledgling group. The Citizens' Voice is in the midst of a $200,000 summer and fall ad- vertising campaign on backing from sup- porters, says Brown. Brown says he’s used to people dredging up his past — he was formerly a top level advisor to Jack Weisgerber in the B.C. Reform party — and making comparisons to more extreme organizations like B.C. FIRE (Foundation for Individual Rights and Equality). The fact is, Brown says, that anyone who seeks to change the direction of treaty negotiation in B.C. is branded anti-native, “It’s all too easy to get marginal- ized,’’ he says. For those who would categorize the Citizens Voice as simply another organ of B.C. Liberal and Reform na- tive poticy, Brown offers differences: i He says his group doesn’t go as far as Liberals or Reformers who want treaty benefits transferred to individu- al natives. The Citizens Voice accepts that those decisions are up to native groups to decide. W@ The Citizens Voice has no prob- lem with the province apologizing to its native citizens for past injustices, “J do believe strongly in the treaty process,’” Brown says, adding the goal is to conclude a Nisga’a treaty that will legitimize the treaty process, Brown says the Citizens Voice on Native Claims wants to cut through the emotionally charged atmosphere surrounding the treaty process and bring debate to a more reasonable and rational level. ‘It’s very, very easy on both sides of the fence to say things that are hurt- ful to the treaty process, that are hate- ful to-native people,’’ Brown says. ‘We've gone to great pains to indi- cate we are not out to kill the treaty process.”’ The elusive Nisga'a treaty — which reached the agreement-in-principle stage 18 months ago — remains tied up in negotiations and is so far hung up on language over certainty and a dispute between Ottawa and Victoria over how to share the ongoing costs of self-government. ‘Brown’s group argues for a 10-year VCRS? et repos ON SALE NOW! MLAs and MPs to attempt to gauge their stance on native treaty policy. Some, however, aren’t playing ball. He’s been getting responses from Reform MPs and MLAs and B.C. Lib- eral MLAs, but nothing so far from members of the NDP government or federal Liberal government. His trip to the region with Citizens Voice director Hamy Bell-Irving at- {racted some interest, but Brown notes the issues of native land claims are not new in this area, He says he’s encountered ‘‘a certain amount of fatigue and resignation” among the northwest region’s resi- dents toward land claims. @ Box 22, IMPROVING Terrace, B.C.; Major Credi Cards YOUR VaG 4A2 Accepted .
