Literally. And as if all this weren’t enough to jolt her back to life, she discovers that her faithful hubby (Hurt) isn’t quite so loyal after all. But then neither is Joe. This is a rather oddball movie, but give it a chance. It’s really quite good once it gets up a little steam. She explains the connection, "As a primary school teacher, I’m ‘so concerned with teaching reading. It just carries over. It (reading) is a kind of magical thing.” Dawn is a recent recruit of Terrace’s new literacy centre, the Reading Place. Dawn has been working with her first literacy student five evenings each weck since May. "He's so keen, so how can I not be?" Dawn believes it’s just human nature to tune out things you think you can’t learn. She fecls there comes a time for people when they want or need to learn to read to access something. This provides a built-in incentive for the student. Then all they need is a facilitator to make the process happen. The process of reading is very involved, says Dawn, but also very rewarding, "Whatever you learn relates to other aspects of life." Dawn herself has learned alot in the process. If you have confi- dence, you don’t have to under- stand every word to understand the meaning. There are no definitive answers to teaching literacy. The instructor has to be flexible and non-judgemental and meet the needs and wants of her/his student. Dawn feels that 90 percent of teaching is ego building. At the same time, she feels treating the student in a business-like manner is often better. As long as people are comfortable and interested, they'll learn, As a teacher and a mother of now-grown children, Dawn Allan believes, "Leaming should be fun, It’s much easier to learn if you’re happy." AS an aside, Dawn adds, "the Year 2000 program is a wonderful opportun- ity to let them (students) think for themselves." There is no way to know if a person is reading and understand- ing unless they read orally. “It’s a real skill to read orally, and also requires confidence," says Dawn.
