DEAR ABBY: The house is finally quiet. My husband and
two teenagers are in bed, but I am so upset I can’t sleep.

Our marriage has been so wonderful, plus we are bleased
with two healthy children who have always been well-
behaved. . ;

We were an exceptionally happy family until about a year

_ ago. So what's the problem? LOUD MUSICI

Abby, why must music be played so loud today? The only
answer we get from our children is,“Hecause.”

The words exchanged between by husband atid son
tonight were terrible. My husband asked our son politely ta

lease turn down the stereo. Our son ignored him, #0 his

father turned the stereo off and announced that neither of
the children would be allowed to play music again until they
agreed to keep the volume at a level that was comfortable
for US.

I've never seen my husband so angry. The kids are mad
and I'm upset. -

Do other parents have this problem? And how do they

handle it?

DEAR AM: Yes, many parents havo that problem, And
they handle it the same way your husband hasdled It—by
exploding and the finally laying down the law.

The upsetting acene could have been avoided had you laid

down the law as soon aa the kids started playing music at a

volume that was disturbing to you.
Loud muuic is “in,” but the price one pays for constantly
fesaulting his eardrums with loud sounds is impaired hear-

DEAR ABBY: My son has a lot of friends, and lately they
have been getting married one after the other, Here is-my
gripe. He has to lay out $48 every time he rents one of those
fancy tuxedos the bridegroom has picked out for him to
wear to the wedding.

1 think if the bridegroom wants his attendants to wear
tuxes, he should pick up the tab for the rental. What is your

opinion?

DEAR MOM: It would be nice iff the bridegroom could af-
ford it, but most cannot, ao it's customary for each attendant

DEAR ABBY: I'm expecting my firat child infour months.
All the beauty of pregnancy and motherhood are slowly be-
ing destroyed by the horror stories of other women.

Ladies I hardly know have told me how the doctor had to
break the baby's arm for delivery, cords choking babies dur-
ing delivery, etc. And as though that weren't enough, I've
been hearing how "dangerous" hospitals are. (Unclean,
mistakes made in the lab and pharmacy.) It's all so Erighten-

ng.

These stories are entirely unsolicited and very unnerving.

Abby, how can I stop these horror stories.
