— The U.S. National Science
Foundation on Tuesday an:
nounced the find in An:
tarctica of a rich cache of
fossilsa—some of them
complete skeletons— - that
‘date back to the Triassic
Period about 230 million
years ago.

The fossils, some of the
best clues ever discovered to
the forms life on earth more
than 200 million years ago,
now arein the cargohold of a
ship steaming from An-
tarctica to the United States,

Some of the skeletons are
reported to represent species
of animals now extinct that
represented a step in the
evolution of mammals from
reptilian and amphibian ILfe
forms. :

“We really don't know
what we've got until we can
examine the fossils more
closely,” Dr. John Cosgrlff,
head of the joint U,S.-
Australian expedition which
made the find, said Tuesday.
“However we are almost
sure that some of them are
new species,”

Cosgrlff, who recently re-
turned from Antarctica, said

some of the 116 fossils were
the size of present day deer.
HAD SHORTER LEGS

“We don’t really know
what they looked like,’’ he
said. “But they had shorter
legs than deer and may
already have begun to grow
a few scraggly hairs.”

Some of the species dis-
covered are similar to others
discovered in areas as far
apart as India, Australia and
Africa and lend weight to the
theory that at one time all
the continents of the world
were ane giant land mass.

The area of the Cumulus
Hills, where the fossils were
discovered, is a windswept
region about 720 kilometres
southeast of McMurdo
Station, the principal U.S,
scientific outpost on the
continent.

690 kilograms, are expected
to reach port sometime in
April. They will then be
transferred to Wayne State
University in Michigan,
where Cosgriff and his
asacciates will study them
further.
