Thomas Marsh., Otto came from a family. of six children, Charles Jr. killed in the woods as a young man, Otto, Bill, Claire, Helena and Marie. Otto and his'sis- . ter Marie, are the only ones left from this family. Otto, who grew up most- ly in Remo, has travelled the world. He says he has never found any place better than Terrace. Otto isa trapper, a. _ veteran,: lighthouse . keeper - and. a former wireless te- legrapher and an air ground controller at the Terrace/ ‘Kitimat airport. As a child, he would walk to get to the old Kalum School; he and Cissy Hare started school together. Both have turned 90 this year and are still full of mischief. At 10 years of age, Otto went out with his father to work in the bush —skidding cedar poles, making trails for the horses, etc. In 1932, 16-year-old Otto climbed into a box car with no money and went to look for work. He got odd jobs in the mills getting known _and eventually came back to Terrace and went to work for Ernie Sande as a swayer and millwright. At 23, he joined the army as an artil- lery man. In 1941, he was sent overseas as an instruc- _ tor and mechanic before.re- © .turning to Terrace in 1947, where he went back to work in the sawmills. Otto’s wife Fran came to Terrace in 1948 to. staff the old Red Cross Hospital. - The couple first met at Ma Lambly’s Café and were married in August 1949... A year later, Otto an- swered an advertisement for a lighthouse keeper at Lan- . gara, They liked it so much '. they stayed for 3 years. When Langara__light- house was being built, one of the first men to work on building it was Otto’s father. Interestingly, 38 years later, Otto answered an advertise-. ment to be its keeper. Otto has lived in Terrace “for 90 years, with a few - years spent overseas, work- ing away. But he grew up in Terrace, went to school here and he says there’s no other place he would rather be. In 2002, Otto and Fran ~ were honoured as Riverboat Captain and Queen. In just over three weeks (Oct. 26), Otto will be 90.
