The study, published in the book Marriage and the ‘Famil Today, and reported recently in the newspaper Nedelya, said the couples most often blame , ‘spiritual incompatibility”. or dif- ficulties in finding housing. Under Soviet law, a couple must apply for a marriage licence at a government registration office and then wait one month before returning to receive the licence. The stud y found that 10 per cent of couples in the city of Vilnus, 11 per cent in Moscow and 15 per cent in Kiev give up their plans and there blamed never return for the second visit. Of 246 such couples who filled out a questionnaire, 78 per cent had known each other less than six months before deciding to get married. Less than half had the wholehearted approval of their parents. The problems of in- decision appeared to affect couples ranging in age from 25 to 35 more than they did younger couples. "HOUSING NOTED Among the reasons cited for the last-minute decision not to get married, 25 per cent of those polled cited spiritual incompatibility and lack of love, 17 per cent had difficulties in findin a housing, 18 per cent sai been a forced parting, 10 per cent charged Heceil seven per cent physical —in- compatibility and three per cent had suffered a sudden iness. The author of the Nedelya review of the study con- cluded that ‘a consideration period is a good measure to prevent accidental and unprepared marriages. I think it would be useful to extend the period to three to six months.” This might serve still further to weed out ill- matched couples and cut- . back on the Soviet Union's soaring divorce rate. In 1975, the last year for which complete figures are available, there were 10,7 million marriages and almost onethird as many divorces—3.1 million.
