+ HER 7 YVONNE MOEN Tribute to local person VERDUN GEORGE Holmes, known as Verdas, passed away on May 31, 1994 after a struggle withcancer, He was born on April 1, 1916 in Avonlea, Saskatchewan to Walter and Lillian Holmes and had four brothers. In 1921, Verd’s family moved to Topley, B.C. In 1941, Verd moved to Prince Rupert and went to work for the CNR on the dragline doing cleanup between Prince Rupert and Prince George. In 1942, during the war years, Verd went to work for the trans- portation department working on ihe construction and survey of the present Seal Cove air base. He received an army call but because of the work he was doing in the shipyards, he was given a referral to build corvette warships and other large freighters. ; During this time in Prince Rupert he met his wife Jean (Dal- zell). Jean was born in Vancouver to Waller and Elfieda Dalzell and had two brothers. The family moved to Prince Rupert with her family when she was three months old, Jean was working at the Chris Mill Bakery in Prince Rupert when she met Verd. Jean and Verd were married on May 23, 1941 in Prince Rupert. While they were living in Rupert, on July 7, 1945 ‘their daughter Lorraine was born. They moved to Topley after the war where Verd built a house for. his family and went to. work cut- ting ties and loading lumber. The family made another move to Decker Lake where Verd and his three brothers, Ivan, Gordon and Merton, went into # partner- ship operating a porlable sawmill, The brothers worked around the Babine area during the winter months. In the summer months, Verd _ buili log cabins at Topley Land- ing. , lasted about four years.
