It is not weight loss that is desirable but FAT loss! We are constantly bom- barded with advertisements for quick weight loss diets. If only they were true, but they are not! The body only cares about one thing and that is. self- preservation. It’s taken. the body a long time to accumulate the excess body fat and it isn’t about to let it go easily. Think of the miser and his hoard of coins: The miser will only spend his wealth frugally and only if he believes that he'll get casy returns. “Well, our body is a miser too. It wilf only burn body fat - as fuel for energy when it feels no threat of deprivation. No quick scheme diet results in the loss of only body. fat. Remember, the body can only lose a maximum of one quarter of a pound of fat (1/dlb.) daily, and this is with exercise and - dicting. If a diet promotes a quicker weight loss than 1-2 lbs. week- ly, it is promoting the loss of water and lean muscle tissuc as well, With the body’s concern about self-preservation, . we have to trick itinto burning its reserve resources, in other words fat Moderation and consistency are the two key factors. The body must do daily aerobic ac- tivity and take in slightly fewer calories than necded to maintain its present body weight. A usual trick of thumb is 100 calories per pound of _body For :‘most.of us it would not be a case of food deprivation to consume 100 calories less than our maintenance level. ° (Never eat less than 1,200 calories a day unless with a physician’s advice.) Most of us truly enjoy eating, so cut the calories, not the food. So decrease the intake of fat by limiting your consumption of: * whole dairy products * vegetable oils (mono- saturated and saturated) * red meat ; * skinned poultry * fried foods * nuts * whole eggs. * condiments and sweeteners “]-- Jnerease consumption of: * whole grains (rice, bread, . pasta) - * fruits, vegetables and legumes * low-fat dairy products * skinless poultry * white fish * egg whites Moderation is the key so don’t set yourself up for a fall; do what is comfortable for you. And, whether you choose to achieve your goal through aerobic activity, active play or cutting back your calorie in- take, you need to be consistent, The body has a short-term memory so don’t just skip meals: be aware and make valued choices. To be successful, lose excess body fat and keep it off, you need to create a happy, healthy lifestyle, one that suits you. Tt takes an excess of 3,500 calories to gain one pound of body fat so imagine how hard it is to Jose that same pound. Each pound is a success in it- self and it takes many success- ful steps to go the distance! In the end, however, it was the Gold who found the extra needed to edge Smithers 15-13. “They played really well,” Summerfelt said of her charges, adding the season had been one of steady improvement. ‘They had a lot of fun too,”’ she added. Sarah Weston, Janine Amold, Vicki Baines, Alison Chase, Colleen — Clarke, Edna Green, Becky Heenan, Candice Huffman, Kylie Oman, Robin Whiting, Christine Zaporzan and alternate Monique Charbonneau, Zaporzan was named to the zone tournament’s ali star team. Although Skeena will lose the present team when they move to Caledonia next school year, Sum- merfelt said that would be offset by the addition of strong players from this year’s grade 8 team, And the move up was good news for the 93 Caledonia Girls squad. ‘They'll have a good crop to work with,” she pointed out. | SIWOLLHBA ASS + SIVOLLHSA AZESV TICALS » ABBEY VERTICALS » ABBEY VER eC Le é OPEN SUNDAY ASK FOR S That set up the final agains in’ the tournament, Skeena - dropped the first game, 15-11.
