OK, says MLA

SKEENA NDP MLA Helmut
Gicsbrecht has rejected claims
he’s going to benefit fom a
change to. the way his con-
stituency office here is financed.

He made the statement Jast
week after news that constiluency
office rents are going to be paid
by the speaker of the provincial
legislature.

The new system also gives
MLAs $3,100 a month for con-
stituency. assistant salarles and
office overhead.

Under the old system, MLAs
received $3,600 a month to cover
‘salaries, overhead and rent.

Giesbrecht said the $500 dif-
ference between the two syslems
matches the office rent he now

pays.
Additional rental costs of taxes,
insurance and maintenance

amount to approximately $1,532
a year. These costs will also be
covered by the speaker’s budget
under the new system.

Giesbrecht has been sharing of-
fice space with now-retired
Skeena NDP MP Jim Fulton.

“T don’t know yet how the new
system will work or what kind of
rental expense we're going to
have,’? said Giesbrecht who will
now have an office of his own.

And because he won't be shar-
ing the cost of office equipment
and supplies anymore, Giesbrecht
anticipates exira costs there,

cial Credit opposition ‘to — the

‘And that means certain neces-
sities such as ground floor access
for peoplc in wheelchairs and the
such. Rents for that kind of space
can be high.””

Giesbrecht also said assisiants
to Liberal and Social Credit
MLAs are paid less than those
who work for NDP MLAs.

“Our assistants have a collec-
tive agreement with us. The
others don’t have an agreement.
We know they are paid less,” he
said.

He added that some opposition
MLAs run their constituency of-
fices out of their place of busi-
ness.

“There are lots of variations in
ihe ways people set up their of-

’ fices. Tt makes it difficult in the
delivery of services. A lot of it is
done on the backs of the as-
sistants,”’ said Giesbrecht.

The MLA added that some
MLAs pay for expenses out of
their own pockets or rely on bake

sales and raffles to help run their

offices.
