CONFIRMATION OF MINUTES: Moved by Alderman Thompson: Seconded by Alderman Mabbett: That the minutes of the regular meeting of this Council held on January 3lst, 1977, be taken as read and adopted. Carried. DELEGATIONS: The City Administrator advised that Mr. R. Thompson was in attendance, along with Mr. D.J. Sharp, Marketing Department Planner for Gulf Oil, to speak to Mr. Yhompson's request for permission to convert his Gulf Service Station located at 1976 Prairie Avenue to a "self serve station with bays", that had been deferred for further consideration at this time in view of the fact that Mayor Campbell was absent at the January 24th, 1977 Counuil meeting, and passage of the motion then proposed required a two- thirds majority vote of all the members of the Council. A letter was also received from the Automotive Retailers' Association, February 3rd, 1977, advising of that organization's opposition to self-serve gas stations being allowed to operate in Port Coquitlam because of the destruction of conventional stations with loss of the "small businessman's" livelihood, displacement of employees and the non-benefit to the consumer with price increases that follow, and submitting supportive data in that regard. On invitation of Mayor Campbell, Mr. Thompson spoke to his request and in referring to a concern expressed previously with respect to the proposed operation causing an increased fire hazard, he advised that a master control button will be installed at the console which will shut everything off in the event of an emergency, and that the staff will be trained to use the more-than-adequate firefighting equipment Minutes - Jan. 31/77 R.Thompson rej proposed self: serve~Gulf S/j Station-1976 Prairie Ave.
