| WAS THERE By VELDA DIMOPOULOS - This incident happened to me during the campaign of the B‘C. Peace Council against the use of the “A” bomb sev- eral years ago. “ I was standing on Pender Street with a petition on “Ban- ning the Bomb”. As_ people passed .I would hold out my petition and ask them, “Have you signed this petition call- ing on all nations to ban the fA” bomb?” . For some time I was stand- ing there in the same place, when a burly police officer |- approached me, “You had bet- ter move on with that, you are obstructing traffic.” > “No sir,” I said, “Only the people who want to stop. stop. I am not obstructing anyone.” “Listen,” he growled at me, *J am warning you, I don’t want to see you here again.” ,. Then my fellow petitioner from across the street came over and asked me what the A-bomb petitioning im the early days ROOFING & SHEET METAL REPAIRS Duroid, Tar and Gravel Reasonable Gutters and Downpipes “NICK BITZ BR 17-6722 GAS HEATING SALES AND INSTALLATIONS ® COMMERCIAL © INDUSTRIAL = fs @ RESIDENTIAL Horry C. Misunder- standing what he said, I went to the nearest phone and call- ed the “POLICE” department. When they answered, I asked, “Ts it against the law to peti- tion on a public street?” “No” was the reply, “there is no law against that.’ Feeling reassured, I resum- ed my old stand and began col- lecting signatures again: My policeman friend stormed up to me and shouted, “I thought I told you to keep moving” “Listen.” I said respectfully. “J just phoned police head- quarters and they informed me I was within my legal right to petition here. NOW do you know more than they do?” NEVER will I forget the ex- pression on his face. He turn- ed white and started sputter- ing. Finally, when he regained his composure, he took down my name and address, as a final gesture of -authority. It was done Before the advent of the H-bomb, Strontium 90, germ toxins, and the rest Of that dark host of diabolical horrors That mark man at his worst. The man that pants for power - And-knows no other goal; The man devoid of conscience Of pity and of soul _ Who dares unleash these horrors °.
