Police have quiet chat with poverty advocate ’ A LOCAL anti-poverty advocate believes he is on some kind sf political watch list maintained by the pice. It came via a iock on the door one morning, recently jist as Gerry King from Skeéna Anti Povetty was-climbing oul of the shower. “| opened the door and there was a po- lice officer staiding there, in uniform,” recalls King, ‘He asked if he could come in”. “The offic er said he wasn't making any accusatiins or anything like that, but he asked me if f knew of anybody that would wish some harm on the premier,” King confinued. When the officer, who King described as a genileman, received an ‘answer to the negative, he left. Th¢ visit occurred just before a provin- ciat Liberal party convention in Penticton in Cctober and King believes it was tied to 7 visit King himself made to the Oka- nagan city a year ago. “He went to an anti-poverty conference iere, tock part in a demonstration and _ anded up having his picture in a local paper. ‘: It was that picture, King now says, which could have resulted in his name being put on a watch list. _ There were demonstrations by people opposing the government during the Lib- eral convention in Penticton and King thinks the police visit was prompted by advance reports of those demonstrations. King’s not all that surprised by the visit given heightened security surround- ing Premier Gordon Campbell since his govemment began mak- ing culs to social and other ser- vices. “With what this guy is doing, I can understand his precau- tions,” said y King, But King did say he felt intimidated Gerry King by the officer’s visit. RCMP would neither confirm nor deny the visit to King. “I won’t really specifically comment on any individual security threat invest- igations thal we’ve done,” said Terrace RCMP Inspector Marlin Degrand. “It is normal practice for us ta do threat assesments or security inquiries prior to the arrival of any VIP.” Inspector Degrand said running secur- ily checks on people is part of the RCMP'’s duties and usually happen when a dignitary is scheduled to visit the com- munity. “It doesn't happen that often in this area, at least in the six months I've been here,” he said.
