A few years ago, Le Festival d’été inaugurated an artists in residence project which has become over the years one of the highlight of it’s program. This year, two bands, one from Quebec, the other from British Columbia, will collaborate in producing two artists-in-residence perfor- mances that will be held free of charge, one on the outdoor CBC Radio- Canada Stage and the other as part of “Vancouver Makes Music” Event. On the theme of fusion between jazz/swing and South American folk, the enchanting duo Sostenuto and the Hot Club de ma rue band from Quebec will spend two days mixing their repertoires and creating new sounds for our enjoyment in two exclusive performances. Sostenuto (BC) Sostenuto is a duo composed of Anna Lumiere (piano, accordion) and Serena Eades (violin, percussion). These two young women play World music that draws on the French “musette” tradition of outdoor dances with Brazilian choros and Argentinian tango. They create a unique sound and original compositions where the beauty of folk-inspired me- lodies blends with captivating rhythms, punctuated with jazz-inspired improvisations. Their credo could well be to live in the present moment in harmony with the world. Le Hot Club de ma Rue (Quebec) Le Hot Club de ma Rue is a swing band that has been performing on stage for the past ten years. They offer a musical retrospective of the decades from the thirties to the fifties, ranging from America to Europe. As their name suggests, they were inspired in large part by the Hot Club de France, a quintet led by Django Reinhardt. To this source of inspiration, they add American swing, traditional French “musette” waltzes, French chansons and Gypsy melodies to their repertoire.
