While the existing bylaw permits the discharge of firearms by members of a
bonefide shooting club we request permission to have this extended to

include waterfowl hunting on Douglas Island.

we The island is singularly and privately owned.

the island has been used for waterfowling since early this century.

wan bhe Sturgeon Slough Game Club (SSGC) has been an incorporated society since the turn

of the century and is the sole lessor of Douglas Island.

WITELTHE CONTINUED PRESENCE OF THE SSGS ON BOUGLAS ISLAND THis
CITY’S AND COMMUNITY'S BENEFITS INCLUDE:

1. Having exclusive control of activities on Douglas Island, the SSGC as caretaker, provides
for the maintenance and care of the island's marsh and surrounding habitat for the benefit
of the resident deer population as well as other wild and bird life.

2. The SSGC enhances and maintains nesting habitat for wood ducks whose population had
diminished in the region but is now on the rise (the hunting of wood ducks is not condaned).

3, The groups presence on the island provides a public service by providing assistance to
thase in need on the river.

4, As caretaker the SSGC endeavours to minimize the impact of trespassers and poachers
which pose a public threat by their presence as well as the possible risk of firing single
projectile guns. Our absence would require the City to increase their patrol and enforcement
of bylaws on an ongoing basis.
