B& - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, February 5, 1997 Security team on full OBSERVE, RECORD, report. That motto may seem familiar in terms of wildlife poach- ing, but it’s also the motto of the security team for the Northern B.C. Winter Gamtes. With thousands of people due to arrive any day you might think their motto would be “Help!"’; but security director Terry Morris says his tcam of more than 150 . people can handle it. “Things should go smoothly,”’ he says. “Tm looking » forward to it.”’ But Marris isn’t looking to crack skulls. He says the role of security at the games will primarily be of support. “We're nol going in all gung-ho,” he says. “The cm- a first-respanse person — someone who can make a deci- sion and contact the right people if help is required.”’ At the 150-person level, the security team is one of the larger contingent of volunteers being assembled to take part in the games. And, just as is the case with other volunteers, they'll be putling in a lot of hours this coming weekend, “Morris, who was director of ceremonies at (he 1986 Winter Games, says the securily volunteers’ prime respon- sibility Is to alert Ihe games’ control centre at the arcna should trouble arise. To stay in touch with the centre, volunteers will be equipped with hand-held radios. “Communication is vital,’ says Mortis, “We watt ta av get the right people to the scene as quickly as possible — whether that’s first aid, an ambulance or police.” Morris says security personnel will also be involved in traffic and crowd control, As for the latter, Morris says he isn’t expecting too many problems. “The vast majority of the people who come to these events are just there to see some competition and have 4 goad time,”’ he says. Morris also points out that the rules about alcohol con- sumption at events are very strict, s0 drunken rowdiness will not be tolerated, “We're not expecting too many problems,” Morris says. “I'm looking forward to a peaceful and fun set of games.”’ Terry Morris phasis will be on the resource aspect, A security person is From concept to a reality DRIVE TOWARD Prince George and turn lefl.
