SMITHERS There are two kinds of people who knock their home town: those who can’t keep their mean- uess hidden, and those who can’t make money,— Van, Sun, The public is not particularly interested in the character and the motives of’ the men who made charges against the minis- ter of mines and the leader of the opposition in connection with the P.G.E. The public wants to ‘know what truth there is in those charges, if any. The public is paying the bill and its wishes are worthy of consideration. If politicians are interested in mo- tives they can take their cases to the general courts and get satisfaction. There is no rea- son why public money should be used to satisfy personal am- bitions. Thus the Royal com- mission should devote itself en- tirely to P.G.E.. matters, and clean them up for all time, r u Expressed in Victoria This city is the political centre of British Columbia. Location and chance ordained that. 8o, the average voter in the Pacific Province must naturally look to his Capital city to ascertain which way the political winds blow, The Twentieth Century has witnessed many momentous years, Comparatively speaking, 1924 may be expected to eclipse all preceding years in many ways, and from a purely political viewpoint this is true. Before this “‘New Year’’ has given way to another, political history in British Columbia will have been made and recored. And while polities are often con- sidered apart from national and provincial development, the fact remains that the two are one. It is absolutely essential that, at thisstage of British Columbia’s growth a strong, progressive, virile administration should be in power. The party system of politics has been the foundation of Anglo- Saxon national life. Just as Christianity revolutionized ‘the world, so have Anglo-Saxon principles of government and justice dominated, the. latter be- ing the logical sequel of the former. The truth of this is forcefully illustrated by the adop- tion ‘of those principles by prac- tically, all progressive nations. Where third ‘parties—Labor, Progressive, Socialist, ‘Soviet, or independent— —have sprang into existence, they have. invariably materia ized through . a tempo- The Omineca Herald .{be held. practices, which have caused a demand for reform—not of ac- knowledged party. principles but areform from the digressions directly responsible for that dis- ruption. Today in British Columbia a third party has sprung into prominence, but the elector alone can decide the genesis of the movement. HH founded upon sincerity it will prevail, but if grounded in selfish ambition or motivated by the lust for person- al profit the movement must naturally fail. Probably before another win- ter comes a general election will The wiseacre names September as the logical month, Meanwhile, a Royal commission will pass judgment upon the Oliver goyernment and the Con- Bervative opposition leader. That white elephant, the P.G.E. Rail- way, is the ‘‘ace in the hole’’, and the political prophet, who is often not without honor even in his own country, foresees the complete vindication of the Oliver administration, as well as the opposition leader, and the conse- quent downfall of the aspiring McRae forces. , Usk _ Skeena’s Industrial Centre l f wm ® Qe reer ee | place in Bethnrem Hall on New Year’s Eve. After judicious ad- vertising of an ‘old-time party”’ everybody far and wide ventured to be present, notwithstanding the most inclement cold spell, the mercury registering 6 below. There were 85 people present, and the dance floor was constant- ly full. Memories of old-time waltzes, mazurkas and lancer figures were re-awakened by the crowd and enjoyed, while more modern frivolities of the light fantastic were indulged in. At midnight lunch was. served and the new year welcomed with the Leap Year waltz. Having their choice thereafter, the ladies bv no means ignored their privilege and showed the sterner sex what sociability was. Most of the entire party stayed until the 34th dance at 3 a.m., to the strains of "Home, Sweet Home’’, ‘Rev. W. J. Parsons, of Terrace: gave a lantern lecture last Wed- nesday night. John Smith returned to town on Wedneaday from Kitwanga, where he was working on the gang which is constructing tne bridge across the Kitwanga River about one mile above the railway bridge. ‘He stated that some blasting had to be done for one of the approaches. The bridge will be part of the trunk road system. ee rary disruption of old-line party | “The Largest Mail Order Medicine House in Northern British Columbia - Prince Rupert \..
