THE CORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PORT COQUITLAM | C 0 , . MEMORANDUM NOV 20 1978 TO: Mayor and Council . November. 16th, 1978 FROM: Leisure Activities Committee Report of the Leisure Activities Committee held November 14th, 1978 IN ATTENDANCE: Alderman G.R. Laking Alderman J.J. Keryluk J. Taylor, Recreation Director F.E. Peters, P. Eng. City Engineer ITEM I Res Lighting of Practice Field for Soccer The Committee has struggled with the problem of insufficient practice time available for the soccer leagues in the city because of the lack of lighted fields which can be used in the evening hours. The installation of lighting on a soccer field would open the field for use each evening. ; . We do not have any grass fields which could take the severe pounding that would result from using the field each evening during the winter when the grass is not growing. It is, therefore, necessary to consider the use of an all-weather field for practice purposes. Two existing all-weather fields would be suitable for potential lighting. These are at the George Pearkes School and the Mary Hill School. If it would be possible to utilize one of these fields, it would save the City a let of money in the construction of another field. Prior to using one of these fields, however, it would be necessary to have a signed agreement with the School Board for sharing the use of the field. The Committee recommends: 1.) . that Council approve in principle of the expenditure of about _ $35,000 from the Parks Development Reserve for the installation of lighting to a practice standard in one of the above mentioned fields. that Council authorize the, Committee to undertake negotiations with the School Board for the lighting and the use of one of these fields and to prepare an agreement for presentation to Council.
